Man robbed by monkey then hijackers

Durban - Just as a 68-year-old Durban man turned his back to chase away a vervet monkey that had stolen his bananas, he came to blows with a hijacker.

"Give me the ****ing keys," the young hijacker, firearm in hand, said to Terry McDowell from Hillcrest on Monday afternoon.

These words made McDowell angry and he swung a blow in the direction of the hijacker, who was standing about half-a-metre away from him, the retired businessman said on Tuesday.

It all started when McDowell arrived at a house in Glenwood - which he usually rents out - to do some maintenance.

Both front doors of his Toyota Hilux double-cab bakkie were open while he was unloading a drill and other equipment onto the driveway.

A bunch of bananas and naartjies - his lunch - lay on the front passenger seat.

One of the vervet monkeys spotted the fruit from a tree.

The monkey managed to snatch the bananas and McDowell ran around the bakkie to chase the animal.

Blank stares

When he turned around, he saw two men standing near him.

"I even told them: 'The bloody monkey stole my bananas.'"

When the men stared at him blankly, McDowell knew something was wrong.

It was then that one of them produced the firearm and demanded the keys.

"If he had been standing 2m away from me I would probably have given him the keys. But he was so close that I hit him."

They rolled around struggling on the pavement, while the second hijacker jumped in the cab and switched on the bakkie with the keys that were still in the ignition.

McDowell was beaten over the head with a firearm three or four times while his attacker kept saying: "I'll kill you!"

McDowell tried to hold onto his assailant's leg, but he lost consciousness and the attacker freed himself and escaped along with his henchman.

Tracker found the bakkie 20 minutes later, but the hijackers were gone.

McDowell needed 20 stitches on his head where he was repeatedly hit with the firearm.

what a drama...... :D

Awesome title i think :D

He was robbed by a monkey then high jacked. Put up a good fight. Far to many racially sensitive people in the world.

And look at the knuckle draggers getting excited by the racial connotations of the thread title.

Another fine example of Beeld reporting. Glad the chap wasn't killed, maybe the gun didn't have any bullets in it?
