Manual vs Automatic

Drove my first automatic about 2 years ago. After a couple of days, I still found myself attempting clutch control in certain situations - but I got used to the convenience of an automatic, and am actually considering one for my next car.

If you do any sort of commute to and from work, you will never regret an auto...

And then to watch all these people in their automatics, at stoplights, jockeying between the engines cutting out and creeping forward as their foot gets tired holding the brake pedal down -- it is a joke.
I sit there in my manual in neutral, handbrake on, and just wait. No stress no fuss.

I don't know what people you have been watching, but I've yet to meet anyone who is so weak that resting their foot on a brake tires their foot.

Anyone so weak would never be able to use the handbrake, depress clutch and do all that manual shifting iin traffic anyway.

Well, maybe they just lose concentration --- because they are too busy playing with their cell phones ......
So much for concentrating on the job at hand.

You say that as if it's impossible to fiddle with your phone in a manual.

Again people with a manual fiddling on their phone are going to be far worse as they have even less control due to the need to occupy the other hand with a stick shift.

Automatic wins again.

You really aren't helping your case.

I think you have been reaching a wee bit in defense of your manual... ;)

No not in the least. Toy automatics are a curse on the roads, that is my story and I am sticking to it.
Won't buy one under any circumstances.

This is a useless point for both sides, like really, my car is better cause it's safer when i'm on my phone???

Was my thinking, too. I actually got stuck in a bit of traffic on the N3 when I was back in SA (the automatic was a loaner from family while I was there for 2 weeks), and not having to constantly shift was an amazing experience.

Hopefully you are sitting there, very observant and scanning all the foot traffic around you and such, ready to flip into gear. A female friend of mine had that manual-in-neutral habit and when criminals struck, all that happened is that the engine rev'ed loudly because in the panic she did not take time to engage 1st gear and thus could not get away. I sit in first gear, clutch pressed in. I'd rather replace a clutch after a long time, than deal with crims.

My last couple of cars have been automatics,

Could never go back to manual for my own use, they are more efficient and less effort as other people have already mentioned.

This being said, I was brought up driving manuals, and I do enjoy the odd opportunity when I get to drive a manual box ;-)

I converted to an Auto about 2 years ago. I would not willingly select a manual now above an Automatic.

Literally the only person losing out with your backwards view point on this is you....

Automatics as daily drivers are literally the way forward.

Has to be new technology though. Some of those older Autos are shyte!

Just love my Landy in Auto, and then tip-tronic for 4x4 to select the gear you want/need. Nothing else needed. AMAZING!

I feel like this is incorrect though, its personal preference, as an enthusiast i would still choose a manual for daily driving over the convenience of an auto.
In my opinion it's mostly non enthusiasts that prefer an auto and since there are more non-enthusiasts than enthusiasts it creates the perception that autos are better.
