Same happened to my dad's phone.
Hi everyone
I have the same problem. i was told by the people at the iStore to do a full restore and start from scratch again, bhut this didnt work.
I lodged a complaint with vodacom about two months ago and they refunded my airtime, which they said was a once off, that was guzzled up by the "Mapping Services" system process.
Yesterday I checked my data usage again and again "Mapping Services" had guzzled up all my data. Again I lodged a complaint with Vodacom. Today a recieved a sms saying they have loaded 1GB of data to my account and that this is a once off. obviously this gives me reason to believe that Vodacom is the culprit. Also it seems as if it is only a Vodacom issue.
I am on a prepaid contract and I haven't encountered any people who have this issue that aren't on a prepaid.
They came back to me, saying there was nothing out of the ordinary - that data usage was correct - and gave me a once-off 500mb package... Wtf?
Been watching things like a hawk - and still none the wiser. Nothing changed my side, never used maps, but the usage was there, in spite of nothing showing in cellular's stats....
If it doesn't happen this month again - well then, so be it.
It isn't a Vodacom issue as i've seen issues from ( Brazil, AT&T, Greece, Netherlands, Namibia, Zimbabwe, MTN, Orange, MTN Cyprus ) all with the same problem, its an apple / apps that require location based services.
Apple had a press release in June;
June 2014
Apple launches a mapping service for the iPhone and iPad
Apple recently unveiled a new mapping service developed internally for its portable devices like iPhone and iPad. It stands as a direct competitor to the popular Google Maps service. This new mapping service, integrated speech support system of the Siri software and can also be used as an automotive guide that provided alternative routes to avoid traffic congestion. Integration with Siri will also help to compete with the Google search engine, for example by providing specific directions to find restaurants and shops
I would say that is the culprit...
Might be - but doesn't explain why nothing is picked up on the device's own cellular data tracking? That's what brought me here initially - Vodacom said I had blown through 1gb of data, when none of that was reflected anywhere on the device (with the exception of the Vodacom app)...

This is on an 8month old iPhone 5S. So yah.. Mapping service eating your data = why?? And yes I use a LOT of location services etc
Seems to be a problem with Vodacom and MTN.
