Hi.
I'm currently on the Vodacom network using an iPhone 5S and since the latest iOS update, the Mapping Services running in the background has been eating all mobile data irrespective of whether I'm connected to Wifi or not.
I've read other forums and noticed many users experiencing the same problem.

Has there been any feedback or resolution from the networks or Apple regarding this problem?

At what pace does this consume your mobile data? I'd love to know if this is a common issue. Someone I know is hesitant to upgrade to a iPhone for fear of disappearing data.

Around 200+ MB on average. So far it has consumed a total of 1.2GB in one week. No response from the network or Apple.
Vodacom blames Apple software and Apple says iPhone users must contact the network directly for phone issues! Pathetic service from both parties. My advice is stay away from the iPhone.

I have a iPhone 5S no such issue though I don't use apple maps.. Still almost everything is enabled and on so this is a very weird issue. Never ever seen it happen to me yet

Settings/iTunes & App Store.. You got Automatic Updates and Use Cellular Data off?

My SO got a 5S as her work phone few weeks back. Checked her data bundle: 1GB. Going through the apps, get the Vodacom "You are almost out of data" SMS. Check data usage: 960MB used by mapping services. Was impressed by the LTE download speed to go through that much data in literally a few minutes. SO was not very impressed that I used all her data.

IT guy at her work turned off some setting and mapping services now behaves.

This is on an 8month old iPhone 5S. So yah.. Mapping service eating your data = why?? And yes I use a LOT of location services etc

Happened to me two days ago. iPhone 5. 600 MB between 4 am - 5 am. Called Vodacom Data support number. I received 500 MB today in the morning. Going to restore the OS tomorrow and restore from iCloud.

Hello all,

Think I am in the same boat. Close on 1GB gone.

Strange thing is, only 164MB was tracked under Cellular settings, since my Statistics/Tracking reset, on 1 August?
Biggest user was Services - 109mb (mostly document sync), and then the rest, mostly Safari.

Which is fine -- but doesn't explain the gaping hole in the data?

How possible is it for something to exchanging/downloading/updating something over Cellular, and NOT to be shown in the Cellular settings? If nothing's there - how do I even begin working out what the problem is?

BTW - don't use Maps.
BTW 2 - most months, hardly use half. Have wifi at home, poor reception at work, so very seldom using 3G...

Any suggestions?

Check if you have the app store set to update over cellular.. This i suspect is what will catch out most people who are unaware as with automatic updates this has an immediate effect.

Nope. Switched off.

It's weird because I've changed no settings, and suddenly, data is being guzzled. I buzzed Vodacom, and will see what they say...

Also - as mentioned, only 134mb's tracked under Cellular since 1 Aug -- hence my question: Can apps use cellular and NOT be picked up under the Settings/Cellular list?
