Marantz NR1402/NR1602 setup guide

Connecting via TV

I also have the NR1402, with revel f12 floorstanding speakers. No sub at the moment. I am hoping that following the setup guide will give the sound a bit more fullness. The auto setup with the mic has way to much high end in my opinion and doesn't sound quite right. Its primarily (80%) used for music (classic rock, electronica, alternative rock, folk).

1) Right now I have our apple TV and PlayStation 3 hooked directly to our new samsung flatscreen via HDMI cables, and then out from the TV to the receiver+speakers via an optical audio out. Am I sacrificing sound/video quality by going through the TV first and then to the receiver? I know the traditional setup is hook everything to the receiver and then run the receiver to the TV...but we just find it easier to use the TV remote to switch back and forth. I will change the setup though if routing everything through the TV first is not getting the most out of our system...

2) Also which sub would you suggest with this setup? Do you think it has to be a revel? I have my eye on the svs SB-1000 at the moment. We live in a smaller condo and dont need wall destroying bass...just something to enhance the low end for music.

3) I also echo Nicky_G, what is the m dax?

Thanks

Ad 1) I would advise against connecting via your TV, since it might down mix your multichannel audio.
I read somewhere the following:
I would advise looking at your TV manual to make sure it actually passes multichannel audio back out the optical output. Some TV's downmix and only pass 2 channel audio back out the optical connection. So if you plug that back into a 5.1 receiver you are going to be disappointed if thats the case. This is of course if multichannel audio is important to you.
My tv's so far will take that signal and output to 5.1 DD, still a downgrade from DTS, 7.1 and so on.

I've never had issues before with adjusting individual channel level... Yet now when I switch to my wdtv and press channel level it comes up on the screen but won't let me navigate or adjust?

Very confused

Did I master reset, redid mic setup as well

I tried to change channel level now and I could, then I make coffee and come back and I can't! It comes and goes, same issue on two different hdmi sources

Ok, I found the problem.

Note - This is the first time I have had more than one HDMI device connected to the AVR.

Turns out that when you press specific buttons on the remote, it takes the remote OUT of AMP mode. this basically disabled the functionality that I was trying to use. So basically I was screwing myself over, pretty hard.

If a button/functionality is not working, press the AMP button (circled in red I think) and your problem will go away.

wasted about 5 hours on that... :o

:D

Hey guys,

So this is a pretty popular receiver at the moment, especially with the specials being run by Dion Wired. After you get it and run the auto-setup, it will still most likely sound a bit flat. This is because the default settings are pretty conservative.

As a result some people have asked which settings to tweak to get it sounding right. So after much fiddling, farting and reading myself, I'll walk you through the main settings to change, as well as what the the more important menu functions mean. For reference I have the Jamo S416 speakers, but it should applies to any speaker set.

Firstly you'll need to press Amp Menu to get to the main menu, and Return to go back one menu. If connected via HDMI to your TV, you should get an onscreen display of the menu.

The first thing to do would be the auto calibration using the mic. You can do that from the Setup Wizard. It doesn't get all the settings right, but is still important in terms of determining the speaker distance etc. based on your various seating positions. Perform the auto setup at a suitable volume, say -45dB, depending on the size of your room.

For the settings below, I've use the numbering system A, 1, i etc. to differentiate top level menus from lower level ones.

A) Audio Adjust menu:
1) Audyssey Settings:
- MultEQ: Choose either Audyssey or Audyssey Flat. You can change these later based on your preference. Choosing Manual will allow you to adjust the equaliser, but I wouldn't recommend this since it still doesn't sound as vibrant as the Audyssey modes. I have mine set to Audyssey Flat.
- Dynamic EQ: On
- Reference Offset: 0dB
- Dynamic Volume: choose either Light, Medium or Heavy. I have mine set to Light. Don't choose Off. This equalises the difference between low and high frequencies, such as loud special fx and soft dialogue in movies. It also automatically reduces the volume during ad breaks, so it's a very handy setting.

B) System Setup menu:
1) Speaker Setup:
i) Bass Setting:
- Subwoofer Mode: choose between LFE or LFE+Main. LFE only means that no signal will be sent to the sub, unless it's a 5.1 signal for which there is a dedicated signal to be sent to your sub. My preference is LFE+Main - this means that all signals below a certain frequency will be sent to the sub, even for stereo sound. I prefer this because subs produce deeper and richer bass than the main speakers, and it also reduces the load on the main speakers.
- LPF for LFE: this is the low pass filter for the sub. It means that any frequency below this setting will be sent to the sub, and anything higher will be sent to the main speakers. I have mine set to 100Hz, meaning everything lower than 100Hz will be sent to the sub. The default value is 80Hz so you can tweak this to your preference, just be careful not to set it too high.
ii) Crossover Frequency:
- Crossover: 80Hz

C) Input Setup menu:
1) Source Level:
- Digital Input: this is probably the most important setting. The default is 0dB, which results in the system sounding a bit flat. Increase it to suit your preference. I have mine set to +7dB.

That should cover it, but it's late and I may have skipped over a few things :D If you have any questions then feel free to ask them here.

/thread necro

You still got your NR1402 and your Jamo S416’s?

Hey, yeah still have my set...

Will PM you, I have the exact set as you and the same amp and curious to hear exactly what settings you are using, from A to Z

I have all the basic settings from your guide but I’m curious about the more advanced settings

Super Necro! I am moving house shortly and will need to run this wizard again, obviously. I have also lost my setup microphone - can i use a generic mic for the purpose?

I wouldn't think so as the automation is probably tuned specifically for the frequency response and polar pattern of that mic. It would likely allow you to complete the process but the EQ would probably be off.

That's what I thought... Will keep researching and perhaps looking for an original one.

hi guys

I have a Marantz 1402 and for the first time I am using optical audio but having an issue.

I have a TV which is connected by HDMI to my playstation. The TV is 4K but obviously the 1402 cannot handle the 4k video (hence the direct link between the TV and PS4 via HDMI)

I have a optical cable connected from the TV into the optical IN on the 1402. The TV is configured to output Audio to optical (it's picking up he cable fine). I happened to take out the cable on the 1402 side, and there is red light shining.

Problem is that I cannot get sound through my 1402 onto my speakers. I've had a look at the Input assignment, but when I try to cycle through there is not option for Optical. I'm uncertain as to what the issue could be.

Any ideas?

I have our TV also connected to the 1402 via optical.

Under Input Setting -> Input Assign -> TV, in the Digital column, choose OPT.

Thanks very much I came right in the end.

That input assignment screen is hard to navigate when you don't have the OSD. I can't pass video through the amp so I have no OSD.

it sucks coz I can't see the volume on the TV screen either
