Marconi Premium Combo or Mega 100wr

Hi all,
Telkom supplies two ADSL Routers; the Marconi Premium Combo and Mega 100wr.

Which one off the two above two Routers are recommended and/or experiences with the Routers by the forum?:confused: I know there are other Routers available out there, but I have to have a look at the current two.

Hi,

I've had both.

I couldn't get the mega100wr to allow me to have a bridged and router connection simultaneously. So I couldn't have a separate local account connected for local downloading such as from news servers. So no RouteSentry with this router.

The marconi premium combo allowed me to do this (instructions at the bottom of this page http://www.marconisa.co.za/premium_combo_modems.htm)

The mega100wr seemed to have better wifi range than the marconi premium combo and seemed a bit easier to setup.

Not sure which is better, neither impressed me. but i got them free with SIO.

Whatever you do, don't pay for these routers, only take them if you getting them free, because for the price, there are a lot better routers available else where.

Not true! ;)
I did manage to setup the mega100wr under brigde mode. Currently have Route Sentry installed on it. :) Can't say more only got it two weeks ago.

The Premium Combo is real nice, no problems with it. (had it from the begining of the year). Easy setup, bridge connection and the range is not bad. Currently in another room and the connection is 100%.

On this one (the usb one), it can only be operated in bridge.

Thanks for your input. I have played with the 2 two for a bit and I also picked up that the wifi is better on the mega.

Something else I am battling with is opening ports on the Marconi. With the mega, I did not have any problems connecting to certain server on different ports… With the Marconi, I am having problems connection to gaming servers with my PS2; I am unable to retrieve emails on other ports; connection to webpages on a different port. If I disable the Marconi router firewall, then everything works fine.
 
I have also had experience with both routers, and find the Mega 100WR a lot better than the premium combo.

Not just in looks ;) but the whole setup of the router is better and it is more secure (making you change your router password on first usage to prevent most ADSL account theft).

The control all in all is a lot better, especially for port forwarding etc. :)

IMO the looks on the Premium Combo is better :p

LOL :D

I like the black style of the Mega 100WR as well as the front panel of lights....however, the wireless antenna (aerial) is something I didn't like, so I never bothered to put it on as I don't use it :)

I think he means dual.. i.e. bridge pass thru or 1/2 bridge mode.. where the router makes a routed connection that it maintains and your pc is still able to make a pppoe connection thru the router. The mega one doesn't seem to support that, the premium does however not directly via the interface and there is a procedure to follow as shown in link he gave.

As for looks ;) the premium combo looks like a mod on the older case design.

You say you did get two connections working at the same time. Were they two bridged connections or one bridged and one on the router?

As Vista does not allow two bridged pppoe connections to be established simultaneously and there is no RASPPPOE for Vista yet. Vista needs one bridged connection and one on the router.

This is what i found in my efforts to dual connect, I could be wrong, but I don't think so.

So if you got one bridged connection and one on the router with a mega100WR please share how you did this with us.

I have setup both Routers by now and personally prefer the Mega 100WR2 to the Marconi Premium Combo, as has a better designed case (one can see the LEDs from the front as well as from the top when it is hanging on a wall) The Marconi has the LEDs hidden away on the top !
Further more one can setup (List of) MAC Addresses for all user equipment that is allowed or should be blocked on the the Mega 100WR2 - up to now I'm still looking for such a feature (which I find very important and very secure - especially on the W-LAN side) on the Marconi Premium Combo.
The MAC Address Lists are also possible to be setup with the Linksys/Cisco 3G Router that Vodacom supplies !
- Could anyone that has found this feature on the Marconi - if it is available - please let me know.

The Marconi however is goung up to 24 Mbps on the ADSL side, while the Mega 100WR2 only can reach up to 20 Mbps. But I think it may stil take a while before the lines in RSA aswell as the Infrastructure and Telkom are ready to supply this.
- And in 3 years it is time to throw out the old hardware in anyway!

The Mega 100WR2 has a loose W-LAN Antenna where as the Marconi's is fixed.

Score so far: 3:1 for the Mega 100WR2

jis a note..... there are 2 versions of the mega100wr

What are the significant differences ?
 
I've just ordered the Do package from telkom and they are including a 4 port ethernet & wi-fi adsl modem free. Does anyone know which modem it is?
