Marketing

Hi Guys,

Ok so my wife invented something which no mother can do without when it comes to babies 1 - 6 months. We're doing the Patent thing (Seeing the Attornies on Saturday)

Now this is truly an invention that will sell globally and we'll register the patent in SA, UK, USA. Now that is the easy part. The biggest problem for us is none of us know anything about launching a product. How do we get in contact with retailers to sell the product to?

Do we go to the head office and make an appointment with the "Buyers" or do we go into business with another company and piggyback on their contacts? I'm not for the piggyback idea as that means less $ in our pocket :p (Meaning I'm willing to do the hard miles in getting our own retailers)

Pls guys, anyone with any info that could help us would be greatly appreciated.

I would make sure that the Patents are sorted out then you contact a couple of Public relations companies they would be able to tell you exactly what to do to get your product in the market.

I did a bunch of researching patents related to gadgets in the past. The bottom line was that if the product is good then the east will rip it off within days of it hitting the shelves so unless you have the cash to fight patent suits globally you should be careful about spending money on patent attorneys. If it's not a gadget then you have more time but in omst cases all you can bank on is first mover advantage and quality. Just my 2cents on the note.

On marketing the product. Every retail industry has freelance reps that work on commission only. They rep a few lines of product from various wholesalers. The way to find them is to go to your target store (eg Babycity) and ask to speak to the buyer. Then ask the buyer who their favorite/best rep is. You can even specify freelance reps as the buyers know them well. Pay the person 10% (or whatever) of orders after payment and they'll do a large part of the marketing for you. If the product is good they'll move it by the ship load because they are 100% motivated by products sales and products that sell well = $$'s for them.

edit .... just a thought Babycity might be a bit big and have centralized buying so you might need to find a smaller store / chain.

Hi Guys,

Identify potential shops, phone buyers, set up meetings and sell. It is dead simple; but very hard work. Also go shop to shop and talk to people. For bigger shops, like chain stores, do the same thing, it just takes a little more time.

I will do it for you, I have time....
