Marriage proposal - Any good ideas?

Has MyBB taught you nothing? :p :D

Do something original like writing will you marry me on the beach :p

That'll only work if she's a very slow reader. I think most people would guess what's going on by the time he gets to "wil".

your mum didnt do anything like that ..

was it just tea biscuits and hey this is Raj ?

Ha! It was my dad who went "So, what's your intentions towards my daughter?" after our fourth date and hubby goes, " Er, I want to marry her?" and that was that. Think my dad was just trying to scare him off though. Right till the moment I'm in my wedding sari about to leave, my dad says, " You know you can change your mind right?" :D
Will be twenty years next year :)

I had all sorts of plans for popping the question. None of them were realised because her sisters ruined the surprise of it. They found out and told her before I could ask. Everything flashy seemed to telegraph the question.

I think if a woman does not expect it, it is the most meaningful. If she doesn't explicitly know that it is coming, then doing something flashy puts the excited, expectant, too-good-to-be-true, denial emotion into her. That excitement is what makes the event stick. So the most important thing to do is make sure that she doesn't see it coming up until the last minute. Don't allow a long build up.

The ideal formula:
Give her a new or rare experience. (If you don't picnic very often then this would count) Even walking on the beach in a new location will work.
Attach that to a nostalgic one. (A place, a Meal, a phrase, a song)
Catch her off guard with the question.

Everything else is just expensive gravy on top. You can of course spend that money, but as long as you fit to the formula above, you will be golden.

I proposed earlier this year on a mountaintop at sunset :) Helicopter dropped us off and picked us up.

WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAT TEH FFFFFUUUUUAAAAAARRRRRCCCKKKK

some of these ideas sound like they'd cost R100k or more

I booked several different things over the course of 2 months, work and life kept getting in the way.
On the final attempt, we went to on a romantic getaway, I got food poisoning on the day we arrived from the lunch.

ended up so fed up with trying to propose in an epic way, that I went down on a knee in our kitchen at home.

What i realised is that whilst the big romatic scenery / gesture thing is ok, its all about the fact that you are proposing. She should be happy about that fact.
I also took quite a bit of care over the ring, design, type of diamonds etc, which she also appreciated.

Do whatever makes you comfortable, and will also make her comfortable. I guarantee, she knows its coming, and when you plan this big lavish "surprise", she knows its happening.

I had a similar situation, except what ruined my proposal was her outright knowing because of her sisters.

I had to scrap all my plans and think up a way to make it a surprise, nothing ended up working. So I settled on something really devious. I didn't propose for 6 months after the point in time that her sisters told her that I was going to. So doubt had completely set in. I also took her on "Romantic" type dates during this time. A picnic, A trip to the Zoo, things like that. After every event she was that little bit more unsure about whether her sisters were actually just lying or whether I had had second thoughts.

Then boom. Wake her up just as she falls asleep with a ring on her pillow and me popping the question. Just the two of us at home, nothing special. I had managed to retain the most important aspect, the surprise. That is all that matters at the end, that and the fact that you are asking.

thats risky. My wife used to be in bad moods when we came home from somewhere where she thought i was going to propose.
