Massive ADSL shock for Telkom

ADSL is doomed in the cities and it's Telkom's own fault.

ADSL is not a priority for Telkom anymore, from what I have seen.

New areas are no longer being wired for ADSL and are going to straight to Fibre.

In my area they are pushing FTTH big time (even to existing ADSL customers). This weekend they had
two big gazebo's and where standing at a main traffic intersection nearby selling their FTTH offers.

ADSL decline is no surprise.

All the people wanting FTTH instead?

And factor the fact that X% didn't pay their massive telkom phone line bill and now blocked on the network cant sign up for a new account, theres also only so many people in SA that has the income to afford an ADSL line, then there is the mobile data factor, fibre too and somehow this is now an article?

What about an article for my company? I have the monopoly in something (meaning I own almost every customer in SA), then I get articles published about my company because I'm not growing at a rate of 4655464% like I did few years ago?

Read about the hype cycle. Telkoms graph seems pretty accurate measured against that.

Go naked ADSL and more people can afford signing up.

No man, Gary... Expected better from you! :p

Well, look at how cosy they are with the DoC. And ICASA never holds them to anything. There is no pressure on them to unbundle the LL or offer naked DSL. :p
Just saying it like it is. The only optimistic sign in the last few years is this separation of retail from wholesale.
Why, do you know people who work there? ;)
Can't you put some pressure on them!?!

Telkom can burn in hell. I ordered a transfer for the end of the month, now it's going to be cut off today and I'm being shunted between helpdesks whenever they put me on hold. Dinosaur parastatal, if I had another choice I'd move in a second.

I do not think this comes as a shock to Telkom. This is part of some strategy of theirs. For a long time now they have stopped new installations of landlines in a large number of neighbourhoods. They have also stopped broadband. They keep using the excuse of cable theft in these neighbourhoods. I know a lot of people who have been trying to get landlines and broadband installed, but they are refused.

We are all forced onto their wireless fixed-line look-a-like lines. They work via 8TA. Here you get maximum 10GB per month for R200 and you can then purchase additional bandwidth when you run out. Just need to mention you also pay the normal monthly fee you would when installing a normal landline.

So, my opinion is that they are slowly, but surely, phasing out ADSL.

If you posted that a few years ago I would agree with you, but times have changed. All those departments and bodies you mention give Telkom more grief than most other operators combined.

Absolutely, no more cabling to homes, so that cuts out a lot of expenses on infrastructure (Yes, those that MTN and Vodacom complains about). Not that I care, but for their sake, I hope they're working on a mobile offering thats a lot faster than fibre and a lot cheaper. Otherwise they will burn in hell, like cerebus stated.

Their decision to do this will have a huge consequence on the Internet in South Africa in the long run. They are just too stupid to see this, but in a few years I will be the first to tell this stupid government 'I told you so'...

Don't understand why anybody would willingly deal with Telkom.

Telkom has greatly improved themselves from just a couple of yrs ago.

I got my Telkom Line & ADSL package from them
In Jan & that whole process was seamless.

My connection literally had no latency...it runs excellent.

I think I had to call them once & that was a long wait & he other day I needed to get hold of them so I dropped them a Tweet & matter was sorted in around 3hrs; that could be better though.

From a pricing & added benefits POV (soft cap; Night Surfer window) Telkom gets a B+ in my books

And no I do not work for Telkom

I have to agree.

I have always been very anti-Telkom to be honest and have never actually recommended them to anyone. I got a lot of flack when I told people I was going to use Telkom for FTTH. I was forced to though since there are no other options in my area. But I have to admit I cannot fault their service. From getting a discount on the first three months to the 5 days installation time to the techies who did a really top class installation.

/closet Telkom fan :o

This is their own doing, plenty of people want it but can't get it. If Telkom isn't actually providing the infrastructure what did they expect?

i applied in may. "if it takes longer than a month, then there's a problem" the lady said. a month later i asked and was told they're upgrading infrastructure in our area, so september.

september the guy comes by and finds no phone lines to any flats. phones supervisor and argues that there's nothing at any flats. appologises to us and says he should be back the next week.

a month later i enquire again and i'm told they're upgrading infrastructure in my area. should be end of october, middle of december, but there are no networks to provide service, so no date can be allocated.

i'm constantly beeching at them on twitter. super annoyed.

I dunno about legislated, but definitely government protected.

Nope. The only reason they have the only DSL network is that no other telecoms company wanted to go through the expense of creating their own

Absolute toss and BS statement. The connected cadres and the judicial system made it impossible and prohibitively expensive for anyone else to enter that market segment. They stole the public paid for copper system and handed it over to their cadre's for free.

Except that it's true

And the word you were looking for was 'tosh', not 'toss'

In your eyes

Let me repeat

Define "public".

I dont see this as an issue for Telkom, imagine Telkom offers a cellphone contract with free ADSL line for 24 months, 1gig contract for R89 plus device plus unlimited wifi access and free ADSL line rental... and any ISP you like.....

Define "public".

Exactly what I said! The copper network belonged to the government and it was handed over to the cadres to benefit from while they kept any other interested party out of the loop. So "public" means it was for the countries benefit and use towards cheap telecoms not for telkom's enrichment.
