Massive ADSL shock for Telkom

Don't understand why anybody would willingly deal with Telkom.

Why not show the growth as % in the table as well?

Flat number is doesn't tell the whole story.

This is their own doing, plenty of people want it but can't get it. If Telkom isn't actually providing the infrastructure what did they expect?

Can't really say it's a shocker, we have known this for quite some time.

Even the people that have infrastructure don't get it. They've laid new cables months ago at my area, everyone around us have internet, yet when I applied they simply piled my application on and I never heard from them again...fair enough I'm with a WISP now. A few people I know complained about the exact same problem, so they can suck it ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

How is this a shock? Telkom had a golden opportunity to do something brilliant with it's copper and ****ed it up royally... Now fibre and LTE are going to kill their golden goose.

Should this not be: "DSL" ?

Or is this just ADSL?

Also, why is it a shock? Telkom's own strategy is to move customers to LTE and FTTH, so logically they should expect a drop in ADSL growth.

The big increase in forced voice line rental has made ADSL not the cheapest option anymore

That's exactly what a monopoly is... a company that owns a key resource that people are forced to deal with because they have no alternative for the same type of service.

Also useful would be number of applications vs installs.
That will show whether it is the demand that is dropping or the service from Telkom.
I suspect the latter.
And of those 1188 what line speeds were they installed at.
Because despite everything Telkom still only offers 4mb Adsl in my area which is pathetic to say the least.
In other words, if there is an application and Telkom only offers 2mb or 4mb in an area, who is going to install that.

Uh huh, a mate of mine wanted ADSL, called Telkom and they said he cound't get ADSL in his street. I live a block away and I have ADSL. Not much sympathy for them to be honest.

All the people wanting FTTH instead?

This. Everyone in the FTTH areas is cancelling as quick as they can. Its also not helped by the fact that Telkom are not upgrading or maintaining their ADSL infrastructure in many parts. My area has gone from being fine at 4Megs to flaky at 2Meg. It got so bad the area got together and organised one of the open access fibre companies. So after Feb next year we'll add to the declining numbers.

If you believe the numbers the fibre salesmen are claiming they are doing 5 suburbs at a time and 10 blocks at a time in each suburb. I presume the other companies are doing similar numbers.

ADSL is doomed in the cities and it's Telkom's own fault.
