Massive bandwidth opportunity

“Casual use of enormous amounts of bandwidth — which unfortunately you guys can’t contemplate yet — is part of what you want to change in South Africa,” Hahn said. “Imagine, you pay an Internet access bill once, it’s a flat rate, and you do whatever you damn well please

Why do I feel like I have just been kicked square in the nuts?

South Africans themselves were unlikely to be able to watch 2010 on HDTV, “but the broadcast itself will be HDTV capable and that has implications for the broadcasting infrastructure.”
Why not? The SABC has all the necessary equipment, large parts of the distribution network will have been changed to digital, HDTV's are available. Does this mean that the STB's will not be HD capable?

I don't believe we have enough HD OB kits. AFAIK Multi choice only has 2 sets and they are playing at how many stadiums (stadii SP?)? I would imagine that Multichoice will buy footage from one of the international companies doing HD for Europe or the US. At least I hope they would.

Is SABC the broadcast persons? Why not Supersport?

eh? Last time I checked the SABC couldn't tie its own shoes laces never mind large scale HD broadcasts. They are way to busy with their board of directors turf wars anyway.

Came across a trench some contractors were working in recently, they were laying dual green and orange pipes for fibre cables for Telkom and Neotel.
2 X Green pipes with plastic Telkom tape over the top of the pipes warning of Fibre cables below and 2 X Orange pipes for Neotel with Neotel warning tape over the top all lying side by side in the same trench.
It is in Bay Road, Mouille Point very close to the Green Point Stadium so pretty sure it is for that.

HOSTING the 2010 Soccer World Cup will speed up the provision of massive bandwidth in South Africa and should bring down the price of telecoms services, an industry analyst predicted yesterday.
Who are these industry analysts that keeps getting the figures wrong? No matter how cheap the competition might be or how much pressure we apply, Telkom doesn't want to speed up our internet, nor do they want do bring the prices down....

zzzzzzzzzzz. heard this all before. this cheap-bandwidth-is-coming thing is like playing that pin-the-donkey game. only thing is, we're the donkey..
