Because it only like launched like 6 months ago, i guess MS SA is still riding the "new launch" wagon. That said, i bought my Xbox One bundle for R6.2k Makro, the total package was cheaper than the PS4 equivalent package. (Obviously without Kinect).

So right now (before this price drop on the PS4) the prices of the Xbox one and PS4 is almost identical.

The overall consensus does however seems to say, the PS4 is more powerful (better graphics) , but Xbox One got more media features right now . The PS4 still don't have DLNA (to stream your media to/from it) wheres the Xbox One has this by default and Windows 10 already have integration with it with a built in app etc.

My personal clincher is of course the Xbox Live thing, the same sub doubles up on Xbox 360 and Xbox One (so it's not 2 seperate subs), so i get free stuff on both consoles for the same sub (i mean it is Assasin's Creed IV:Black Flag for free on Xbox 360 right now....) . Since Sony now also require the same payment to play multiplayer on PS4 , the main drawback between PS3 / Xbox 360 (for me anyway) in the past is also now null and void.

PS4 platform is more for gaming or rather, those that choose it do so for gaming predominantly. XBox owners tend to be the ones who like the Media Center like features based on what i've read
 
That is a shame. My ps3 has been a great streamer and when it dies I will have to look at something else.

The features has been promised by Sony, so it's not like it isn't coming, it's just a case of when. You can stream by installing the Plex App on your PS4, but it is not currently free (need to buy a Plex Pass subscription @R50 per month / R400 per yr). The Plex App will become free the moment Sony adds DLNA, watch ;)

You will have to add an OS to it , to play most games, this will need to be Windows, so add R1k-R2k to above hardware :)

Also need to add Chassis + PSU .

And add the controllers, these things goes for like R700-R900 each. That usually covers the costs of a PC gaming keyboard+mouse .

If you have an O/S, which most builders will have, the build comes to R6,650. My guess is you can chop/change and get the price even lower for the same performance of a PS4. This build allows for some horsepower spare.

Do you need two motherboards to build a pc these days? gamepad & optical drive is also not required.

Ah I thought there was an error...let me fix. The Gamepad and optical drive is to align similarly to what a PS4 would offer.

People seem to forget that you can also write a document or send an email from a PC which you can't do from a PS4 afaik. My PC is connected to my monitor for general use and then I have an hdmi link to my TV with a wireless keyboard and two Xbox controllers for gaming/streaming. I would still need the PC if I bought a PS4 so why not have one device that does both? Games on the PC are demonstrably cheaper as well, even the launch price comparisons are laughable.

However, the PS4 does have the benefit of being (largely) plug and play and for people with kids who need to use the PC at the same time as someone else is playing games it is a much simpler, dedicated alternative. However in that situation I would build a much cheaper SteamBox (with the free SteamOS) and stream from the main PC but I am a nerd that way. That being said I had a PS One and PS2 and I loved them, simpler times.

What really fscked me off consoles is the lack of backwards compatibility for games. I spent quite a bit of cash on the PS Store, which now counts for nothing if I go to PS4. Also, the fact that you now have to have a PS+ Sub to play online, only for Sony to decommission the Servers as new versions of the games come out was the final straw.

PC with emulator for XB and PS with physical copies solves everything.
