Massive Price Increase

This is depressing news. Getting my ps3 soon but wont be able to afford R1000 games!

You know this whole price thing is making me seriously re-consider buying the ps3. I can now afford the console but wont be able to spend R900+ on a game.

Then why get it if you can't afford the games? Use the R5000 to upgrade your pc.

Such witty comments so early in the week

He admits he can't afford PS3 games. PC games are R350.

You can almost get a full pc with R5000. If he has a pc already(must be since he's posting here), that R5000 will get a VERY nice gaming pc.

Okay. Ive decided im not financialy ready for a ps3. I dont even know how kids can afford to these next gen consoles.
I have decided to do the wise thing and invest the money into my new business. Postmanpot(Or is it pat) is hooking me up with a HP core 2 duo Laptop for 6K:)
So my return to the PS3 will have to wait a while, but if my business becomes succesful a PS3 will be the first thing I buy...after the audi S3 ofcours;)

I still wouldn't pay R1000 a game if I was driving an S3

Wise choice

Its really sad how the price has gotten out of hand. Soon 2nd hand games will be going for R600. People can say what they want but piracy will go up when these price increases come into effect. Thats just the way it is unfortunately.
Anyways goodluck coping with the new prices guys. Wish you luck.

So let me get this straight. We have to pay about R700pm for a 4MB (3GB capped) telkom line just to experience (a crappy xbox live experience btw) our games as they were meant to be played...and now in addition to that we'll pay R1000 for a game?
So if you buy one game a month and want to play it online, you'll pay almost R2K. This is ridiculous.

As much as I hate piracy, this sounds like the cue I needed to chip my Xbox.

No it's a cue to get smart and not pay top dollar for *****e.

The book industry has had it for ages and there is no reason not to get smart and just work together. - Game sharing clubs, trade, preplayed, Classics they're all options. If anyone has to have the latest and the greatest at full retail, they're nothing but a victim of their own consumerism.

Are you serious? By using that justification you might as well go a few steps further and tell me that since I've had just as much fun playing 8bit games several years ago I might as well go back to a Golden China "console". I don't disagree that there are other options to consider. But my expensive move to Xbox (and 5.1 surround, and hi-def tv) was exactly because I wanted to do next-gen gaming in the most convenient and hassle free way possible.
Those other options are smart, but when you work 8hrs a day and have limited time over weekends to play there's simply too much effort and time involved in executing those strategies.
There is absolutely no way in justifying R1K per game. It's really hard to take a dump on pirating (and to judge the people who pirate) when prices are going to be this high.
I think the best option for me (theoretically) would be to pay my R1K for the really great games, and to pirate the crappier titles now and then.
The problem with the xbox however is that modding it voids your warranty, and I'm afraid the risk of RROD is just too great to take the chance, or is it?

Like the idea of game sharing clubs.

The games have been ripped for ages on the PS3.

Custom firmware or whatever it takes to break the encryption algorithms has been the stumbling block. However, the price of blank Blu-Ray media doesn't help the pirates cause :D

It's amazing how many guys are suddenly considering piracy due to the price increases. That's like saying the price of an Audi R8 is so ridiculous, you'd rather just steal it. An increase in something's price shouldn't be an excuse to justify a crime.

Look, I'm not encouraging piracy.

It's just that local gamers, who don't have the budget of their American counterparts, could IN THEORY, purchase an Xbox 360 and chip it.

How many South Africans can afford Live subscriptions?

Therefore chipping their boxes won't have a disabling effect on their consoles..

It's an option for the less financially stable gamer..
