Massive WeChat growth in SA

He He. Koos Bekker is certainly a major driver of the company growth but I doubt whether he was the founder in 1915! He took the company into the digital age and oversaw the massive value that came from investing in tencent.

Nope. Used to be.
They are based in Amsterdam now. They still own many South African companies though (Media24, DSTV and MWeb). They still have a listing on the JSE as well (And most of their employees are still in SA)

Exactly. That is why I am not paying for the product at the offered price. I found it not good value.

I wholeheartedly agree with you! The money they charge is not only not good value for money. I found it to be a complete ripoff! The only reason they exist in my mind, is because the have they monopoly over the South African rugby and a bit of soccer. Many of their channels are a rebroadcast from the USA. Quite a fee of these are available for free on the internet. Just about all the news channels, Animal planet, Fashion TV are just a few to mention. And do not go down the rebroadcast alley!

You know someone is a WeChat user when ...

The next person I meet that uses WeChat, will be the first. That is locally and abroad.

I hear that it's some kind of chat client, but without someone to chat to, I have no reason to bother with it. It's not even an open system, so why move away from Skype and WhatsApp?

Though it might not be open for users, it does have an open API, which is great, and that's what is driving adoption around the world as 3rd parties are using it as a platform to run their services on, something you can't do with Skype and WhatsApp.
