math literacy

all teachers should have at least normal maths as it is a subject requiring logic and all teachers should have logical thinking in order to assist with teaching of their pupils

So English teachers should know how to teach calculus to make them logical in teaching?

Lol @ people referring to matric maths as pure maths...
It's an easier way to tell the difference between the two.
Some will tell you they got a distinction in maths and you think they really smart, meantime it was for maths lit :p

I took maths lit from the beginning of grade 10, knowing that I would struggle with pure maths in later years.
I also did not need pure maths for what I wanted to study at varsity.
Passing
matric with maths lit is not the end of the world and will in no way limit your future (providing you do not want to work with numbers)
:)

dude what did u study in varsity ? i dont know how u can be happy with maths lit. its ****

Yes, it does depend on who you are. Some just tell themselves "I suck" and let it go. Some work at it. The point is, Maths lit isn't the most difficult subject and there are no reasons to give up. Just work harder.

god. kids fail math lit cos they are dismotivated to do it and take it for granted. if Maths was compulsory in every school im sure pupil would pass it

not with the current batch of teachers they wouldn't.

teachers wouldn't even pass.

I don't know if you're looking for advice on this issue, but for the love of all that is holy, do NOT enrol her for math literacy. It's better to get an E or possibly a D for math than to enrol for math literacy. Many university faculties do not accept students who have done math lit, even if passed with a distinction.

An example would be my university's computer science dept which would accept a D for maths, but don't accept math lit at all.

In my opinion it's better to bring in some extra help in the form of a tutor and scraping through it.

EDIT: I hope I understood the problem correctly, in the sense that she's currently taking Math but wants to switch to Math Lit?

I highly doubt that if her child is failing Maths Lit that she would even remotely pass normal Maths.

FACKING NECRO!!!

The OP was ambiguous and this was posted months ago btw (edit: almost 3 years actually). :p

.

It places a serious limitation on a person's life if you are doing maths lit. Most degrees do not accept maths lit and require pure maths. Fair enough, she may not want to study a maths intensive degree and thats completely fine, but why just throw it away and not focus on it? Maths is important in every facet of life regardless if She should try her best to develop her skills, even if it means going back to grade 8 and 9 work.
the child was in grade10 going back to grade8 cos of math would have taken an extremely good parent to do that to their child

The other problem is that kids today just don't have any self-discipline. Maths is a subject where you need to continuously work at it in order to understand it. It's not really that difficult, it's just that most kids expect to sit in the class and listen to the teacher and skip actually working at their maths and then come report card time the poor teacher has to shoulder all the blame.

No wonder many schools have trouble getting maths teachers.

if the teacher is trash its best to get a totur. one thing ive noticed is that alot of Maths A's come from the white schools that cost 20K+ e.g northen cliff high school. the reason for this is white people get tutors for their kids. they get involved in each and evry expect on the kids life.

meanwhile black people have no money to high tutor and they send kids to schools where A's are only achieved in LO and history.

i went to a colored school and since from 2008 no one has ever gotten A for physics and maths.

So black people do not send their kids for tutor lessons in maths only all white people?

How racist of the white people! Must be Jan van Riebeeck's fault for landing on our ports or Dr HF Verwoerd's fault for making maths so difficult hey?

dude maths lit is a joke u are right. in WITS the only degree u can do with maths lit is..

1. B. arts
2. B. Nursing (pure maths from 2017)
3. B.Ed

that's all. 3 ****ing degrees everything else requires mathematics.

You forgot LLB

I went to a good school and we had many, many A's in every available subject. Only the struggling kids bothered with private tutors. Maths didn't even take up that much time and effort. I got an A (80 on the dot) for maths in matric and all it required was doing my homework.

Someone change the thread title please, it's driving me nuts... :(
