Mauritius

Recif Attitude. Brilliant place 3 star but definitely 4 star . Done through holiday factory . 10 night stay half board . North west . It's a small hotel 40 rooms but beach at door step . Ask for seafront room . What you pay and get cannot compare. Thus for your budget can definitely do it paid 32000 for two people incl flights pick up ect
Through whom did you book?

Mauritius Winter is still plenty hot. Comparable to Durban. He will get the odd shower or so.

Indeed.

IMHO the best time to go is mid-Sept to mid-Nov: all the Europeans have gone back after their summer holidays, but none of the ZAs are on their year-end holidays yet.

AVOID going in Dec - too many ZAs and too many Europeans escaping their winter.

Aww, I see they tore down Le Coco Beach and built another place in its stead. That was an awesome resort. We would sit on the beach and they would bring us Shwarmas and pizzas on scooters.

We went there twice with my parents, last time about 8 years ago. Back then we paid R24k a person for a two week stay, all inclusive. Not really worth going if you don't take an all inclusive package because food works out too expensive otherwise. We ate more than our fill on our package.

If you managed to wing it in Zanzibar you can wing it anywhere. Zanzibar is beautiful (beaches etc) but made an absolute ****hole by the locals.

Went to Zanzibar in 2007, and Seychelles in 2013. I would not go back to Zanzibar, Seychelles is a much friendlier destination IMHO.

Would love to try Seychelles but its become quite overpriced for what it is.

Im going back to Le Canonier later this year.
Its in the north and its perfect for what I want, to relax and have people wait on me hand and foot!
Last time we rented a car for a day from the hotel and went to see all the spots ourselves.
Mauritius is a pretty crappy place aside from the resorts so if you plan on going there then go an enjoy the hotel and all it has to offer.

We were at Le Canonnier in 2007 and we weren't very impressed with it compared to the resort we were at before. The pictures that come up on Google now don't look anything like the resort we visited, though, so I don't know if they moved or annexed another resort.

The main problem was the fact that their beach was right in the bay where all the ships came in, so there were no reefs or snorkeling opportunities. The previous resort we were at was surrounded by reefs everywhere and we spent most of our time snorkeling around there. Le Canonnier's buffet was also a bit disappointing and unlike the previous resort, the only food we could get during the day was sandwiches.

Funny, I was talking to a friend about this on the weekend. He had been to Mauritius two years back and said the place was a dump (except for the tourist attractions of course).

Why do your friends say its a dump exactly? I've only been here 2 months and i'm trying it hard to find out why it would be a dump?

I also wonder.Been going there every second year since 2007 and can't see why he would say that.
Actually planning to relocate in the next 10 years as its such an amazing place and perfect for our lifestyle.

Outside of the resorts and maybe Grande Baie, Mauritius is mostly a dump. Most of the island looks like slums. I also didn't eat any beef in the restaurants, because I don't trust that all those stray dogs they catch in traps every day don't accidentally end up in your food...

:p

It's just a very third world country. I don't really see why that means people shouldn't want to go there, but it's not really a place where you go to admire the way people live. If you want to spend most of your time in a world-class resort, go to Mauritius. If you want to spend most of your time outside your resort, go elsewhere.

So basically because people don't live in a fancy high rise or a complex with barb wire and electric fences or a villa on an Italian pebble street then its viewed as a dump?
If this is what classifying a country as looking like a dump then Thailand, vietnam, cambodia, laos are all dumps too.

I don't think you went very far outside your resort to justify your answer as everywhere else is a dump.

He said the village outside of the tourist area was almost like a squatter camp.

This is exactly what he said.
