over there..
Hi Guys,

So i'm currently on a 4Mb adsl line with telkom, and even to this simple thing took me a fair amount of work due to the fact that my distance from the exchange means i only technically should get 2Mb.

Anyway, my 4Mb line works well, but i see now that on the http://www2.telkom.co.za/checkadsl/check.htm site, my line area now supports up to 10Mb, where previously only used to be 4Mb.
However, if i go into my router, it shows that my max attainable Sync speed is only ~7000kbps.
So, does that mean if i try to upgrade my line, the best i could hope for is 7Mb or could it be that telkom might change my port/etc(don't even know if that would make a difference).

Basically, not sure if i really want to get back into the ring with telkom, and if its really worth it(i do want a 10mb line though).

Any advice would be appreciated.

btw, i miss Charl :(

That's the way I understand it yes, I'm in a 20 MB area and max speed my router shows is 8 MB, I even tried going up to a 10 MB but it still syncs at max 8 MB.
For now ASSIA is messing me around and dropped me to 5.6 MB, so I'm trying to get back up to the 8 MB max which my router shows.

Yea we all miss Charl, dude helped me a lot. :(

But let me give you some sound advice:), do not go any higher than 4mb, if you had issue getting that 4mb line in the first place, chances that you will end up with a messed up line due the distance and really bad copper is really good. Trust me I was there, twice!!:(...Just decided to bite the bullet and stay on 4mb, even though we have 10mb in the area, below is my attainable rate. But do keep in mind the router uses your current SNR stats to calculate the attainable rate, so when you do upgrade to the attainable rate, your SNR obviously goes down as well, making your line unstable, which then causes ASSIA DSM to interfere as bigboy529 described. So to keep you from pulling out your hair and having high blood pressure:p, stay on 4mb till telkom installs a MSAN closer to you :)

+1, giving this another month maybe 2 and if I don't get it sorted I'll also go down to 4 MB again.

Currently syncing at 5mb, on 4mb so wondering if its worth upgrading to 8mb for better netflix experience.

Is it sycning @ 5120kbps?, If so ,its just ASSIA DSM optimizing your line. And as for Netflix, I'm getting 720p on my 4mb line. I'm pretty sure you would need to apply for their $11.99 package to get full HD.. If you can't get 720p on netflix right now, you might have line issues like Fluctuating SNR, looking at the routers stats your SNR is borderline. 6.4db could cause instability issues when it comes to streaming or even gaming. Some people are lucky to get a stable connection with that kinda SNR.

There is a way to see what you getting: stream any video open in full screen mode then, press and hold shift+ctrl+alt and then press D it should display the stream stats, just check what your video quality is . Should look something like this.
