May 2005 - WBS iBurst Technical Problems...

Stange man

Hey Dude . Dunno whats going on there with your iburst mate. Ive had to for now 4 months already nd NEVER ever get timeouts etc. Play CS online every night with a general ping of 60 to 70 which isnt bad considering its wireless. MIRC no problem . Messenger no problem . Just call the call centre and im sure they will sort you or. O get hold of the Iburst Network dude m Hell help you sort things out man . Mail me if you dont come right !

Depends how close you are to your tower, I suppose.

Dunno about Skype, but I DLed a 30MB file this morning. Took a few minutes.

I still have a few probs. Very often, when i wake up in the morning the internet is 'dead'. It is connected and all but nothing works - email, browsing, msn etc. I have to disconnect the connection then reconnect, and then it works 100%. Also sometimes during the day MSN had intermitten problems - on and off until it either cuts out for a coupld of hours or is connected and stable.

I connect to linksfield which is nice and fast and generally stable.

i think thats due to WBS' uplink partners having problems of late, since about thursday or friday last week

Roodepoort tower linked via Northcliff Tower

I am getting fed-up. I have had only had bad speeds, disconnects etc. via the Roodepoort tower, and i am not even a kilometer , direct line of sigt (Lange Ave) from the tower. Well within the dark green zone.

I think the Roodepoort tower is totally over subscribed at the moment, and with it linked to WBS via the Northcliff tower, this makes it even slower.

Florida tower, please come on line. Hopefully that will help a little bit??????????

After Six months WBS still have to impress me. Only twice i have had more than 800kbps for short periods of time. Rest of the time i idle at 100-200kbps. that tells me that the signal strenghts is not the problem. its the bandwidth on WBS's side.

wht you guyz think?

I am still having great problems with Iburst
My connection averages to 97Kbits (single thread)
But jumps 0-200kibits at random some times staying on 0 for up to 20sec
(this is while doing telkom test)

As of yet there is no viable solution I have called wbs on several occassions and have tryed many different solutions. None have worked so far.

I am still waiting for the next response from wbs (they did respond with a message fwded).

Hopefully this will be the final response I will need from them and will post here with what it is.

Oh BTW I have also had several hours of complete disconnection (and the inablity to reconnect) of late.

I'm uncapped (or suppose to be) and a 64k diginet line (who has 15 concurrent users and an exchange server receiving/sending mail at all time) is faster than my iburst at this stage.

I keep on getting timeouts and slow web browsing (and on email, took me over 35 minutes to receive 1.6meg worth of emails)

Can't wait till they install my freaking ADSL (bastards already overdue!)

Hentie : I have been keeping a log of my speed every time i go online and in the last 2 months i have only ever gone over 512 six times ! speed at best isdn speed . End of this month i will decide wether to continue with this or go for Asdl which speed and cost is starting to look more inviting .

If I were having so many problems and such sh1tty speeds, and I had tried everything in my power to fix it, I would just ditch it and get something else. Clearly it is not working for you. Didn't you test your signal and connection speeds before subscribing?

That MTU of 1400 looks plain wrong. Try 1432 or 1352.

And with apologies to Forrest Gump, that is all I have to say about that.

cannot get ADSL till (maybe next year according to hellkom) sucktech has no coverage. ISDN is ok but its becoming far to expensive.

MTU now beenset by Ipcop at 1432 but tests using ping -f ..... got to 1372
+28 =1400.

Maybe I should try change ipcop to 1400?

Signal was and is perfect and speeds were good (>200Kbits/s was fine)

Yeah, but if you have a perfect signal you should be getting >1000kbps, if not all the time, then most the time. Mind you, I can't vouch for that Bryanston BS.

It's not supposed to happen, but sometimes ping -f just doesn't work properly, insofar that if you already have the MTU set at 1400, it can't seem to get any higher than 1400 (packet size 1372) before fragmenting. So set your MTU well above the test range, say 1500. Reboot, and then retry the ping -f test. Then, I think, you'll find the correct MTU is 1432, with fragmentation occuring at 1404.

I cannot do that coz ping on linux does something different. But I did reset the MTU to 1500 and try that when using windows XP and not ipcop.

Update:
Wbs have responded and have arranged to come fix the problem...
Also told me to move arial around for sweet spot ... Found out doing that, that they must have put up a new tower and found a better spot to get better download rate
thx wbs

Some solutions.
1. Speed depend of the YOURS signal (from the modem) to the tower. Your modem can show 5 lights, but this is strengh of the TOWER tranmitter signal!!! Tower simply does not see you properly. Transmitting speed automatically goes down if tower not see strong signal from your modem.Try to move modem or to use High Gain antenna. Antenna also CONCENTRATE yours signal to the tower direction and increase speed.
2. With High Gain antenna you can connect to the different towers. My modem is 1.5km from Northcliff tower. 5 light. Connection speed WAS up to s--t! Ping up to 1900ms!!! After usage of logoperiodic antenna and connection to Roodeport tower (5-8 km) - 38 - 80 ms and stable speed 800 - 1000kbps.

Wbs have HUGE problem with Northcliff tower. And don't have brains to fix it.

Can I ask you some questions please:

I am not an RF expert at all but I was informed that iBurst uses multipath signals and you have to use the antenna they provided as any other design does not work. What log-periodic antenna did you use and where did you buy it from?

I had bad signal last night and I suspect I am picking up Northcliff at night which is s--t. I am trying to connect to Roodepoort again

You can use ANY unidirectional (YAGI, logoperiodic, spyral e t.c.) antena for 1800 - 1900 MHz. My one i made by myself.

Interesting.... so WBS lied again and made me fork out R600 for a piece of **** patch antenna.

GRES I assume you made sure your VSWR is within acceptable limits. Did you measure it?

VSWR is matching to the antenna. so if VSWR = 1 your antenna is matched to your UTD. If your antenna is mismatched to your UTD it could cause the RF power amplifier to overheat or be damaged. I know for sure the UTD firmware monitors RF PA temperature.
