OK, its up the company/institution involved. They can legally refuse legal tender above those amounts, they cannot refuse legal tender below those amounts.

Correct. Just saying that they won't say no to kids at a toy store.

You can still legally pay them in

50c of 5 cents, then R5 worth of 10 cents, R50 of R1s and then the rest in R10 notes...

That is what I will be doing then.

I'm just wondering why there is no mention of R2 and R5 coins on that page, but R55.50 in change is a good start and if everyone pays in cash it will significantly burden SANRAL's etrolling shops.

Many other examples....
SABC license fees
AARTO processing fees
Unresonable ESKOM hikes
Unresonable rates in raxes due to inflated land valuations...ad nuseum ...

I think the e-tolling is going to be a bit different.
There is massive public rejection of the system from all sectors of society.

A quick question. Is there a comprehensive list of how the billing and payment process works for non-etag users. Currently, most of the info circulating doesn't spell it out in detail or is either SANRAL spin or copy and paste hearsay or newspaper sensationalism. .

this, make a small excel calculator for it, but not gonna affect them in reality because you have to deposit at the bank anyway? poor tellers job, not SANRAL's.

However we need to EFT the payments in increments of 1c/appropriate, if they get 10000000 payments of 1c they will not know what to do. The admin involved to allocate amounts like that if not a automated system would be insane.

or we just burn them down? I think it's simpler and would feel rather soothing :)

I thought the info on SANRAL's e-toll web site http://www.sanral.co.za/e-toll/ was quite clear.

So I hear mums a said they will not be backing the ANC in the coming elections if they don't scrap the etolls. Who will they back? Eff?

I hear this all the time, come elections, then ANC just EFT the unions and they vote ANC. Just like all the other key moments, hulle *** lekker saam in the bed maar appear apart.

It still doesn't state how they will send the bill to non-registered users in the 'grace period' and ensure the bill is received by the user. Nor do they state that the onus is on the non-registered user to go to e-toll booths to check.

It's very clear in the terms and conditions (under Downloads).

Paragraph 6.2
Your responsibility to pay for an e-toll transaction and fee starts from the date and time that the e-toll transaction occurred or that the fee was charged to your e-toll account. You must not wait for invoices and statements before paying.
You will be able to get details at any time, of the e-toll transactions and fees which you have not paid, by accessing your e-toll account on the website or by contacting the e-toll call centre.

You do not receive a statement, tax invoice or receipt at the time when you pass under an e-toll plaza. You also do not receive a statement, tax invoice or receipt at the time when you use an e-tag to pass through or under an e-toll plaza on roads that are not GFIP-toll roads.

Invoices are sent every 15 days.

Haha

I cant wait to see all the private court cases to thwart these BS terms and conditions that nobody ever agreed to.

So, I have 7 days to pay, but they send out invoices only every 15 days. Ad this is if you a registered as an etoll user. What if you are not registered?

Yeah, I don't see how that will work. I can think that there are several hundreds of not hundreds of thousands of road users who don't follow the news and who have no idea what these things are. Especially those from other provinces etc. How on earth you can expect them to just pitch up and pay for something they've never heard about before is beyond me? I'm yet to see any notices on the road which inform the users of the entire process that they need to follow if not registered, and I don't see how they will be able to add such a detailed process to the roads without distracting the drivers.

The SA National Roads Agency Limited (Sanral) is expecting smooth revenue collection through e-tolling, Transport Minister Dipuo Peters said on Sunday.

“The system is ready. We expect a smooth process from December 3,” Peters told media at a briefing on the e-tolling system’s readiness.

The briefing took place at the Sanral operations centre in Midrand from where the e-tolling system is operated.

The system had been operating for the past 18 months, and Sanral was able to test the system without billing road users.

Peters said reports that revenue collected through e-tolling would go offshore was a myth.

“There are local firms that are participants and service providers of various aspects of the system. At least 90 percent of software being used to operate the system was developed locally.”

The system included emergency and vehicle-towing services on the province’s highways. High performance cameras had been mounted on the gantries and were being monitored at the operations centre.

“These services would be operated 24 hours a day… these are some of the benefits of using the tolled highways,” she said.

Peters criticised those who opposed e-tolling and said it was time they moved on.

The National Union of Metalworkers of SA (Numsa) was misleading motorists, she said.

The union criticised e-tolling after Peters announced the December 3 date, saying road users should refrain from voting for the ANC at next year’s general elections.

“I did not expect a union to say such. We will need more roads and good infrastructure even after the elections.

“Numsa is misleading the public, unless it wants to tell us that it is transforming itself into a political party…”

She labelled the Democratic Alliance as “politically bankrupt” for putting up anti-tolling billboards along the highways.

Sanral chief executive Nazir Alli said those who did not pay would face the law.

Motorists were expected to pay within seven days after receiving e-toll bills or they would be handed over to debt collectors, he said.

“If debt collection fails, the Criminal Procedure Act will come into effect and such motorists will receive summons to that effect.”

Alli said at least 700,000 people had already registered for e-tags.

“At least 100,000 registered between October and November after we announced the tariffs. We expect more to get tagged,” Alli said.

He said those who registered and bought e-tags would receive a 48 percent discount.

Wow, just wow. Blatant lie from the esteemed-my-ass minister.

If you're not a registered user you get sent an invoice.
If you pay within the grace period (7 days) you get discounts and if not then you pay the full tariff which is really expensive.
However this does not appear to be anywhere on the SANRAL website.

So SANRAL have their backs covered - they will invoice you but you will end up paying the full tariffs.
