President Thabo Mbeki has officially been asked by the ANC to resign as head of state, a member of the ruling party's leadership confirmed on Saturday.

The decision will see several key govenrment excutives also resign inculding Deputy President Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka.

It is understood that parliament will reconvene next week to formalise the process.

Denzil Taylor, spokesperson for Deputy President Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka said on Saturday morning that should parliament reconvene she would step down.

Sad.

If you guys are interested, 702 will have the news conference/announcement live at 12:30, followed by a discussion and opportunity for listeners to phone in.

Ya, half past 12.... it will also be live on telly on some channel.

thats what they said last night. first a press conference at 5pm then 6pm then 7.30pm then nothing.

This isn't a bad thing!

This action could split the ANC or, at the very least, create huge voter apathy towards the ANC. This will result in more votes for the opposition! When elections come around again, GO VOTE EVERYONE!

I have been thinking the same thing. Might not be all gloom and doom completely:)

Any confirmations/sauces??

Do not really know what to think over this.

I can't really see too much positives though. A monopoly within a monopoly, not sure that is good for democracy on the whole.

I don't know about any confirmations ......................... but a cheese and bacon sauce is wicked on a burger ;):p:D

Only Sauces thus far.

E news, waiting for the press conference to start. Should be interesting.

Seriously, conference to start 13h10. Could get ugly or...

Asked or told - Now that is the question!!:cool:
Well last night on eNews it was mentioned that the NEC doesn't have the authority to boot him out, only to request him to step down but if Mbeki fights this then things are gonna get ugly real quick.

Johannesburg - The fate of President Thabo Mbeki should be known at 13:00 when the ANC National Executive Committee holds a press conference about its deliberations.

The National Executive Committee have been locked in talks since Friday about the repercussions of the Judge Chris Nicholson's ruling.

The NEC are expected to announce whether Mbeki will be allowed to stay on as President after the ruling inferred he was involved in "political meddling" or whether Mbeki will be asked to resign immediately.

It had earlier announced the press conference would be held at 12:30. On Friday night, an expected conference was delayed by several hours, only for journalists to be told that no decision had yet been made by ANC Secretary General Gwede Mantashe.

On Saturday morning The Weekender newspaper first reported that the ANC NEC has reached a decision on the future of President Thabo Mbeki.

According to the paper, the NEC decided in the early hours of the morning that President Thabo Mbeki will be told to resign.

The report states officials would inform Mbeki, who was not present at the meeting, about their decision later on Saturday morning.

The newspaper also says word of the decision spread in an early-morning SMS message which read: "Mbeki is history. It's official".

Deputy president Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka has indicated that if Mbeki is asked to resign, she will resign in solidarity, paving that way for Speaker of Parliament Baleka Mbete to be sworn in as acting President.

Sorry to burst your bubble but Anc supporters don't vote for opposition if they're unhappy WE just replace the leadership.
