Mbeki gets R90 million security wall

Not even taking into account how many people dislike bush, comparing the president of the USA to the president of SA is a joke.

I thinl old T-bone has delusions of grandeur...

this 'imported' wall <or components thereof> will it be shipped or flown in? yes, that's what the presidential jet will be used for!

blame all this on PPC. they have no more capacity left and are reduced to importing cement, yes, that is why t-bone has to import this wall, not?

cheers

You and I both don't have access to intelligence info, so we will never know what prompted the building of the wall.

Nice duck. Make some claim and then give some random excuse to why you can't support your claim. Well done.

Et voila! Paranoia.

GW Bush is considered an imperialistic warmonger, and has enemies who have attacked his country. Also, the US has a nasty habit of losing presidents to assassination.

No-one has threatened either Mbeki or the country, yet you compare this third-world intellectual leader to the most high-profile political figure on the planet? A man who is hated by large portions of the world? I don't see anyone burning our flag or pictures of Thabo. Your reasoning is faulty.

If someone wanted to take out Mbeki, all they'd need would be a hunting rifle, a scope, and an itinerary. Walls aren't going to prevent that.

Clearly from my post above ( post 98 ), the Boeremag had seriously considered taking Mbeki out, so just based on that there is a threat to his life, more importantly whoever takes over as President could face similair or more or even less threats, so the building of the wall may be needed to protect current and future Presidents

Man you people enjoy talking out your @ss don't you.

Assassination is mentioned once and then everyone goes on about it for 2 pages.

The cannot release details of security features for VIP's. I think everyone can understand that.

R90m is complete cr@p and I think everyone believes that as well.

The president needs security. Again I don't think you need to be a rocket scientist to figure that out.

Whoever said the Boeremag didn't want to kill people seriously needs to get their head out of the sand.

Does anyone have a single shred of evidence that wall is really being built? Or that Mbeki wants it built? Or anything other than an idiotic article in the Beeld which had no substance behind it??

Maybe we should merge this thread with the one about Mandela being on a ventilator? They both seem to come from the same source...

Irrelevant. Secure access to T-Bone is superb. Not even a member of the press has gotten near him without permission for his 2 terms to date.

No your response is irrelevant, we are talking about access to the official home of the President of a country, not how many people have access to the person, how many people do you think can walk up to GW, Tony Blair, or Lula da Silva without permission - to think that happens is simply idiotic

Oh the Boeremag are the brightest people ever to have walked this earth aren't they? Assassinate with home made bombs - yeah that would've succeeded. If someone really wants to take them out, they will.

Again... a wall isn't going to help against an assassin. The argument is irrelevant. Also, his residence already has a wall.

The President's house is not walled in, it is fenced off, with a terraced garden up to his house, there is one short wall, but that is it

Once again you compare an insignificant timid incompetent president of a lackluster insignificant little country to the world's most important leaders. GW probably has a whole army gunning for him. Scratch that. GW has several million people wanting him dead. T-Bone wished he was that important.

How would you know? Are you the gardener or do you work in the laundry?

Man you people enjoy talking out your @ss don't you.

You need to relax a bit. We are all just poking some fun at a most probably theoretical situation. If it really stresses you out that much don't read this thread.

So tell me, have there been assassination attempts before? What has happened recently that his current security arrangements are no longer sufficient? How and why has the threat increased?

Besides the obvious posted above how about these:
How much time does he really spend in that house?
How is the wall going to prevent an assassination?

Using common-sense, there will be easier places to take him out then in his home. The whole assassination excuse is farcical.

Not as farcical, as the idiots who think such things can work. Such ludicrious attempts are part of our history, remember a couple of khaki clad beer belied thugs in old mercedes benzes who wanted to return mangope of the former bantustan of Bophutatswana to power after he was popularly toppled through riots pre-independence, Boere Aanvals Troepe, who bombed worcester shopping centre killing four and injuring 60

‘Die Volk’ who wanted to arm whites to take over the country after they had incited black people to murder each other and create chaos in the country. The group had allegedly also planned to assassinate president Thabo Mbeki, cordon off Bloemfontein, take over parliament and poison the drinking water in black areas.

All these point to the existance of a fringe of our society who have very hazy ideas of changing power in the country, through very violent means, including killing the president.

I will excuse your ignorance, as you clearly do not understand the strategic importance of this little country, or the respect that President Mbeki has in international politics

I am not saying that GW and Mbeki have the same amount of enemies or even influence in the world, that is why I included President Da Silva on the list, you could use any President really

What I was trying to illustrate is that access to a head of Government is usually very limited, and I was trying to point out that that is not what we are talking about, as we are talking about access to their official homes, most official homes of leaders are very well protected - that just stands to reason

You misunderstood what icyrus was saying: he was saying that if there was an assassination attempt on T-Bone, the wall would probably not prevent such an attempt.

Access to all heads of state are restricted, but you really took what I said out of context. My point was that if he appears in public (something T-Bone very, very rarely does in this country), he is probably most at risk. A wall around his residence is not going to make any sort of difference. In any case, if someone really wanted to waste a bullet, then T-Bone would've been dead by now. But T-Bone hardly ever appears anywhere for long - except at funerals...

Oh, and significance of this country? Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha. Nice joke there buddy. And as for T-bone's being respected - The African Peer review program participants didn't rate him all too well did they. I'm tired of talking about T-bone anyway, he is a useless moron who doesn't demand or command my respect. So whatever you believe, it's irrelevant to me because T-Bone is not my president.

Just as they cannot prevent attacks on us at our homes, but we still put up walls because we perceive them to be first line of defense against a probable attack.

And we all have several bodyguards, SAPS protection and decoys in our entourage?

How is any of that related to what I said?
