Mbeki on ICT

More work needs to be done to increase South Africa's usage of information and communications technologies (ICTs), a meeting chaired by President Thabo Mbeki in Limpopo decided on Sunday.

Well that just happens to have been noticed by pretty much everyone else on this planet, oh about 10 years ago..

Wonder how daft T-bone is for him to have to hire a panel of expensive "experts" to come to that conclusion?

I agree, he could have just started a thread here on the forum, someone would have explained it to him. AND it’s free. :D

mbeki is as dumb as a door stop, perhaps more so.

When are people going to start thinging BEYOND 2010. Yes - the world will continue to exist after 2010, Brazil is already making preparation from 2014, shoudn't SA start focusing on what happens post 2010 ?

Stunning conclusion. That sound is my jaw hitting the floor.

Easy, my dear old chap.

Give telkom, the DoC and !casa the boot, start LLU aggressively, and hire more competent people.

But it is a little bit too late... 2010 is just round the corner, and nothing positive have been done so far.

Give him a break

You just had to go through that route??? A lot needs to be done, that I admit, but give him a break. Mr. Mbeki has been a good president, more so better than Mr. Mandela, thats why a lot of people do not feel a void post 1994 presidential term, in fact things have been better.

If you want to pass judgement, then wait till May 2009 when his term expires as president....

Please note that South Africa is a democratic state, and signatory to free trade, and the president acts within the boundries of the constitution. Also note that the poorness of costitution is largely inherited from the apartheid goverment, whereby presidents are accountable to their parties instead of the voters, whereby the president is the will of the party and not that of the people.

Blaming the president is purely groundless unless you understand the governing policies and regulations of the Presidency and constitution at large.

Unless Mbeki had sweeping powers such as those of Mugabe or Chavez, then we can really start to argue:sick:, till then lets all be practical....

....

Oh please man. How can you blame shortcomings in our constitution on apartheid? The ANC government re-wrote the entire constitution and yet you still blame the mistakes on apartheid? When and where, according to you then, should the current government be held accountable for their own mistakes?

Yawn. Name a category and the mbeki government has failed at it:
Education... check
Healthcare... check
Infrastructure... check
Telecoms... check
Power... check
Foreign policy... check

mbeki is an embarrassment to every South African able to think. I would have thought people wouldn't need further evidence than his Aids denialism but apparently they do. No worry, he has provided plenty of others.

Where do you get that? 1994 elections were subject to an approved constitution by Apartheid goverment and ANC, IFP etc.

Our electoral system needs to be more aligned to the Zimbabwen system, all negativities aside, we need to seperate local goverment, palamentary and presidential votes...

Education?
A lot still needs to be done, fail? NO! more people have access to education, there are various finance models available to those who cannot afford to study. OBE system is more advanced than the old Bantu Systems, hungry kids are being fed at schools, some don't pay fees. If it was pre-90s, I would not have been able to study(studied with NSFAS), in fact I would not have been permitted to study Geology.

Healthcare More people have access to health services than before, children receive immunization. I can talk about sex squads, but not going there, people now receive Anti-Retroviral drugs. Phamaceutical drugs are more affordable, yet still a lot needs to be done...

Infrastructure Well you must be blinded if you cannot see the existitng infrastructure and those that are under construction... Use a taxi, things might appear differently.

Telecoms Telecommunication has improved, today I can do everthing that I want with my phone, be it video call, file attachement, downloads, emails etc, all that, from a rural village.

Power Its a serious problem, maybe if we were allowed to study engineering in the past, then we would have been able address the problem more effectively

Foreign policy We might as well be having the best foreign policies in the world, just look at our policy to Zimbabwe? Mbeki has secured us lucrative deals and exploration rights in Africa, the prosperity of South Africa depends largely on the prosperity of other African coutries. You want Mbeki to stand on roof-tops and crtisize, unfortunately for many, he is a deligent and practical man. Just look at the recent deal we signed with Venezuela...

Mbeki is not an embarrassment to me as well as lot others. Your AIDS denialism is based largely on media propaganda. He asked an intelligent question, How can a (1)virus cause a sydrome? , consult dictionary for definitions... And yes I am able to think...

Regards,

So you would have rather had the white people cut out completely? Racist bigot!

Maybe if you didn't fire all the qualified engineers this wouldn't be a problem. Yup, cutting off your nose to spite you face. Well done, you need some sort of prize!

Maybe if Mbeki focussed more on this country than the rest in Africa he could have achieved something. He didn't, and he hasn't.

President does not hire or fire engineers... By the way, from which company were they fired? Do not confuse firing with resignation. Even kindergarden kids now that the newspapers/tabloids blow things out of proportion

PW BOTHAIf God wanted us to be equal to the Blacks, he would have created us all of a uniform colour and intellect. But he created us differently: Whites, Blacks, Yellow, Rulers and the ruled. Intellectually, we are superior to the Blacks; that has been proven beyond any reasonable doubt over the years. I believe that the Afrikaner is an honest, God fearing person, who has demonstrated practically the right way of being.

Talk about HIV
PW BOTHAAs the records show that the Black man is dying to go to bed with the White woman, here is our unique opportunity. Our Sex Mercenary Squad should go out and camouflage with Apartheid Fighters while doing their operations quietly administering slow killing poison and fertility destroyers to those Blacks they thus befriend.
We are modifying the Sex Mercenary Squad by introducing White men who should go for the militant Black woman and any other vulnerable Black woman. We have received a new supply of prostitutes from Europe and America who are desperate and too keen to take up the appointments.

The government is the primary shareholder in Eskom. As such they are 100% responsible for situation. I don't know why the hell you are going on about the President firing engineers, but the CEO (with the blessing of Tbone) sure did.

Why the big hype about BEE? Force resignation is tantamount to firing. Resignation due to being ousted by AA candidates is tantamount to firing. You managers might sugar coat it, but whichever way you look, they got rid of skilled engineers for the sake of BEE.

There were qualified engineers, regardless of whether black people had the opportunity or not, and now there is not. We have serious power problems affecting all levels of people, mostly black. Proud of yourself now?

If you're so in the know: why did all these engineers resign en masse? Coincidence, I think not.

Even kindergarden [sic] kids know that the ANC propaganda machine obfuscates things

Not at all, just elaborating on electoral system, where it came from and how it came about....

Regards,

I agree with you, the electoral system in SA is stupid. A directly elected president would be a better solution. At the same time they could get rid of party nominated electoral lists. While they're at it, the electorate should be voting in provincial premiers as well.

Basically what should happen is that the elected are responsible to the people as well, and not to only to their party. There has been some talk about this, see here and here. While I'm ranting, more autonomy for the provinces would be nice as well.

You make some good points. However, we tend to be more based on a Westminster government structure, yet we have a president.

@news24: this is how you structure an argument. It is a lot better than just blurting out: "Eish! The electoral system, she's not good". Give reasons, solutions, anything... just don't tell us something is/isn't good.
