Mboweni won't apologise!!

His deadline to apologise to the shareholder he pulled the race card on, was today. He won't apologise.

ohannesburg - South African Reserve Bank Governor Tito Mboweni did not apologise on Friday for an allegedly racist jibe he is accused of making to a shareholder at the bank's September 18 annual general meeting.

Instead, he denied the allegations in a letter written by his lawyers to shareholder Mario Pretorius.

Unlikely. Personal egos (and Tito has one of the biggest) seem to put ahead of all matter of public interest in this country.

From all accounts Mboweni was out of line. The chairman's job is to report to shareholders, and he is accountable to them, not above them.

It's also time that people started realising that pulling the race card is unacceptable. It's no better than ending an argument by saying 'whatever', in fact it is probably more childish.

Mboweni and his ilk need to grow up. They are in business, and therefore need to conduct themselves like professionals.

Wow! I wish my English was this good. There must be a calm and clear mind behind them, almost like a poem to me.
In a statement replying to Mboweni's letter, Pretorius described his refusal to apologise as a "milestone in disappointment" for every South African "cruelly branded with the shameful and divisive word 'racist'".

He had tried to keep the spirit of reconciliation alive in the past two weeks, "but it now seems to be dying".

"Soon expensive lawyers will be picking over its bones and pronouncing on the dry legalities of the events and the mechanics oflaw.

"It is still my hope that good sense will prevail and that national interest will take precedence over personal ego.

"I have also examined and re-examined my own motives and I am clear that with this small stand against racism and abuse I am saluting the many and varied South Africans who had taken an often difficult stand on principle."

His hope was still to help reconcile South Africa's people and help find good leaders to unite them from divergent pasts into a common future.

"I will now consult with legal experts on the most effective way forward and I will leave no stone unturned to restore my reputation and rid myself from this label as a ?racist'.

"In doing so I hope to benefit every South African who finds himself or herself in a position of bearing racist insults," he said.

When one considers the definition of racism, how is this comment racist? It may be defamatory (I say might as I am not familiar with that law). But I can't see this falling into the classical racism definition.

EDIT: As far as I am aware, not all comments that mention race (even if they may be uncouth), means the comments are racist.

I think the main issue is that Tito's outburst was a veiled attempt at embarrassing someone (who is obviously someone of important stature) in front of his peers by implying that he was being racist. Clearly, looking at the circumstances, Tito was being a dick, and his racism card was both unnecessary and in itself perceivable as racist.

I didnt say anytihng about him being racist - he just has a big chip on his shoulder and i dont like him, and probably his poo doesnt stink either.

as far as i am aware accusing someone of being racist does not by default make you racist. as i said it may be a case of defamation.

You were the only that quoted what Tito said.

For what its worth I do think he was out of order. But I can't see where he was racist.

Article from the Times today.
The fracas started when shareholder Michael Duerr tried to ask whether newly elected directors could introduce themselves to shareholders. Mboweni slapped him down and said he could leave the meeting if he didn’t like the way it was run.

Pretorius said he thought the governor’s behaviour was shocking. Mboweni retorted that Pretorius was talking to him like whites used to talk to blacks and wouldn’t let him say another word.

Was Pretorius talking to Mboweni as an apartheid-era white to a black man?

“I was addressing him as the chairman of the meeting; I don’t care who he is,” says Pretorius.

He says what annoyed him initially was that Duerr “was not even into his question when he was ruled out of order”.

Nobody else was allowed to ask anything, either, he says.

“Maybe he didn’t want anybody to ask him any question relating to his salary.”

I dont see it as racist. It might not have been a clever thing to say but if what he said was racist... I dont know.

"Dont talk to me like whats used to talk to blacks" - Not racist (As I see it)
If he would have said "Dont talk to me like a typical white" Or a similar statement that is racist.
 
If I read between the lines there are bigger issues at the SA reserve bank that need attention when this racism thing is dealt with properly. Seems like Mboweni is trying to deflect attention away from some internal politics and shady deals going on refusing points of orders and such the way he did.

One has to wonder what the hell is going...
 
IMO he could not do the job when he was put there by the ANC. He still cant do the job. It is just another darkie ANC clone sitting where he/she does not deserve to be messing up just something else in sa. Using aggression, suppression, and whatever else he/she can do to suppress the fact that... They should not be there in the first place.
 
It was racist because he tried to play the race card to get this guy to shut up, and to discredit him. The irrelevant inclusion of race by Tito, was used by him, to dodge other things, and his willingness to pour salt into old wounds just to make himself appear more important and untouchable, was not a good move. Its a bit like a Jew, pulling out the holocaust in a business meeting with some Germans if you know what I mean..

There are a few things that you don't bring up, or entertain at work or business meetings.

-Race
-Your salary
