Appeal will stretch on and on, and isn't head of Tswane Metro Police still? If so then another big fight as to whether he gets paid or not. As far as this case is concerned are we (taxpayers) paying, the drunk driving had nothing to do with his official duties.

He's never worked for Tshwane. Ekurhuleni fired him during the trial.
And yes, the state has been paying his fees. He was 'on duty'at the time of the accident. Rushing to an accident scene apparently.

My mum worked at the Parade Hotel and was injured in the blast on the night. The only thing that saved her was a support pillar at the end of the bar that she happened to be standing behind. The entire front and side of the bar was glass, from ground level to roof. She helped carry the victims outside and also gave testimony at the TRC. She has many, many scars and had both eardrums burst... still shakes when talks about it.

It was actually "The WhyNot Bar" that was bombed, he parked his car right outside it... but Magoos was a media promotion because it was more widely known - and was named after a parrot, Mr. Magoo, the owner's pet. It was NOT an exclusive haunt of off duty military or police officers, it was a soft target and chosen because of this. The owner of the hotel at the time, Russel Davidson, ended up shooting himself in front of his family one night. McBride's actions had a lot of detrimental repercussions.

McBride has not expressed anything but denial of any accountability to the survivors and the victim's families... Arch Bishop Desmond Tutu tried to persuade McBride to make some sort of motion towards the admission of accountability, but failed. The victims and survivors have yet to receive any formal acknowledgement of injury from the government.

So no, she has not made peace with McBride... and won't until there is some human reflection of regret and remorse from him for the damage, pain and suffering he and his bomb has caused.

EDIT: The Judge at his drunk driving trial went on record with the following description of McBride...

When sentencing McBride, Johnson said he had disgraced the police and had showed no remorse for his crimes.

McBride stood quietly in the dock as Johnson read out the sentence.

"The disrespect your unit displayed at the scene of the accident is nothing less than the actions of thugs. Though you did not participate, it was done in your presence," said Johnson.

"People were threatened with firearms and this happened in your presence, and as police chief you did nothing.

"Your conduct at the scene was inappropriate. You misused your position to try to cover up the fact that you were driving under the influence."

Johnson said McBride "lived a life of lies" and threatened and suspended officers who did not want to help him cover up.

"You are indeed an evil person, Mr McBride. You have an overinflated view of yourself and you down-played the seriousness of the crimes. You showed no remorse."
