Mead is an alcoholic beverage created by fermenting honey with water, sometimes with various fruits, spices, grains, or hops. The alcoholic content ranges from about 8% ABV to more than 20%.

I am in search of a place that sells Mead, preferably in the Johannesburg Area, as I am aware of the meaderies in the Cape. Does anyone have any information on the sweet Viking drink known as mead?

Raw Honey, situated in Heuningklip no less, sells its unpasteurised honey at three different markets in the Joburg area – The Jozi Food Market in Victory Park, Bamboo Farmers’ Market in Melville and Neighbourgood in Braamfontein – as well as from the Luciana dairy shop on Dorothy Road (Tarlton Road area). Recommended is Caroline Whitehead’s Bee’s Choice product that combines her most aromatic honeys. Raw Honey is the Gauteng representative of the Makana Meadery that makes mead in the traditional, local San manner.
Ethical shopper tip: All the honey products are badger-friendly; Caroline is a qualified bee remover and registered beekeeper.

You could phone them.

Ye Olde English Shoppe
While on Olde English booze, here's some Bonus Unrelated Information:

The "Ye" is pronounced "The". That's because the "Y" character is in fact not a modern Y but the Old & Middle English Thorn (a letter), which was pronounced "th". The Y letter was used with a superscript E to denote "The", because early printing presses didn't have a Thorn character.

So, the next time you see Ye Olde English Shoppe, remember to say "The Old English Shop". Those with you will correct you, and then you can correct them. ;)

Edit: Just saw this in Wikipedia:
The word was never pronounced with a "y" sound, though, even when so written. The first printing of the King James Version of the Bible in 1611 used the Y form of thorn with a superscript E in places such as Job 1:9, John 15:1, and Romans 15:29. It also used a similar form with a superscript T, which was an abbreviated that, in places such as 2 Corinthians 13:7. All were replaced in later printings by the or that, respectively

Edit2: And then there's this for further info.

Bought some once from a place near Ficksburg.
Terrible stuff. Stood on the shelf while we tried to find a use for it. Ended up going glug glug down the toilet.

Hi Kevin, I make mead - i have some stock of traditional dry mead if you are interested.

Where are you situated, bud? I'm keen on trying my hand at my next batch (since my first kind of flopped, but it's still good enough now that it's stood a while), but I wouldn't mind getting some pricing on bottles to find out if it's worth making it myself.
