A Free State MEC is expected to appear in the Bloemfontein Magistrate's Court on Monday after he was caught driving at a festive season record speed of 235km/h, the Rapport reported on Sunday.

MEC for sport, arts, culture and recreation in the Free State, Dan Kgothule, was caught on Thursday along the N1 freeway in Glen, outside Bloemfontein, speeding in his BMW 745, the newspaper reported.

He was arrested and released on R2000 bail.

Fastest festive period speed

Kgothule's two spokespeople told the newspaper when contacted about the incident that it was the first they had heard of the MEC's arrest and they were unable to get hold of him.

Kgothule's speeding broke records not only during the festive period, but also for the fastest speed in the Glen area where there are often speed traps on the N1.

Captain Rulene Kuhn said Kgothule would appear in court together with other motorists who were arrested on Thursday for driving at over 171km/h on the highway.

185km/h average speed of bust drivers

Sydney Mogaecho Acting Director of Traffic Management in the Free State told Rapport that 126 people were arrested over the festive season.

These included 48 for speeding, 50 for drunk driving, and seven for reckless driving.

"The average speed of the motorists arrested was 185 km/h."

Kgothule clocked just a few km/h less than murdered strip club owner, Lolly Jackson, who was caught speeding in 2005 doing 249km/h in his Lamborghini in the East Rand, and was fined R20 000.

Interesting to see what fine he will get......been a MEC AND ALL?

They need to make an example of him. Especially due to the festive season.

Now come the real test - if they let him go with a rap on the knuckles then it can be said that there's two set of laws - one for us, and one for them.

Damn apartheid and its agents. Poor hardworking, honest MECs just cant seem to catch a break, can they? I mean its obvious that the agents of apartheid hijacked the advanced electronics of his BMW and made it go so fast.

On a serious note, congratulations to the cops for not treating him any differently despite probably knowing who and what he was and the trouble he can most likely cause for them.

Don't get too excited, the police might catch them but they'll probably still go free. Remember a certain piss-drunk metro police chief who crashed into a wall? A certain corrupt accountant who after finally getting sentenced, got out on medical parole to "die in peace" and made a miraculous recovery?

Thats what they would have done for anybody else in his situation, it remains to be seen what will happen to him.

I'd rather say "One for those with money and one for those without".

I know a few, ordinary middle-class, citizens who have been arrested for speeding, drinking etc. Just like our friends here, they could afford lawyers who know how to poke holes in the system. They're always really sorry and swear never to do it again. A year goes by and they get back to their usual antics.

Damn that was harsh. How could anybody afford to pay that kind of money.....

ffs doing 235 without a blue light convey to bully everyone away, he is a terrible example to other officials!
