Hi Guys,

I'm new to MyBroadband and are not sure if this is in the right section so please bear with me!

I have a Telkom DLink router for my ADSL. I connect via wireless to the router from my notebook. I also have a Mede8er media device that I connect via the LAN cable to the router. Now here is my problem, when I connect the Mede8er I lose wireless connectivity from my laptop. It refuses to connect while the Mede8er is on, once I put the Mede8er off I can connect from my laptop to the router. Any ideas?

The Mede8er is setup to have an IP assigned via DHCP.

Is each device being assigned a unique IP address i.e. 192.168.1.1 and 192.168.1.2 etc.? On my media player you can find the IP address in one of the menus. If not, maybe you could try to assign fixed IP addresses to the devices to avoid any possible conflicts.

Hi There,
make sure that your notebook does not have the same IP address as the Mede8er.
I would if possible run everything using DHCP and asssign IP as a last resort.

regards

Tim

Thanx for the replies guys, both my Mede8er and laptop uses DHCP for auto IP assignment. After the router has assigned them I have checked that they are unique, that's the funny thing, it just refuses to connect to the WAN when the Mede8er is plugged into a LAN port, when I plug my laptop into one of the LAN ports on the router then it works fine.

IP address might be not conflicting, but if you have two DHCP servers on one LAN it won't work anyway. Enable on single device, disable on all others.

The Mede8er is setup to have an IP assigned via DHCP.

D-link is notorious for having dodgy DHCP servers but besides that it's a nice router.

What i would do to try and resolve this is to give the DHCP server a limited pool like 200 to 254 then give the Mede8er media device a static IP outside the DHCP server ofcourse. Then for the wi-fi on the laptop specify the DNS servers, i suggest google's public servers so you don't have to keep fiddling with it if you move around with the laptop.

8.8.8.8
8.8.4.4

Also make sure the mede8er player DHCP server is off if it has one. I googled it and looked through a setup guide for one which didn't have DHCP server option but your one might....

Thanx for all the advice, will check it out tonight at home and let you know if any of this has helped!

Ok, found the problem, though highly perplexed by modern day equipment doing this! I had my router on top of my Mede8er, it seems like it was some sort of interference, maybe the router is not shielded properly? I have a TrendNet router as well and it also stood on top of the media player with no issues! Thanx for all the advice and help guys!
