Mede8er vs PlayOn!HD

They are too new. I have not had any chance yet to evaluate any of the new units... but will get one as soon as possible.
Looks nice though... nice price as well.

Gary, they are only new here (which I'm sure you are aware of but I am pointing this out for the benefit of the OP). They have been in the overseas market for a long time and have a well developed community with regular updates apparently.

mm001, I've been reading up on this for a while and it appears to be 6 to one and half a dozen to the other. The tipping point for me would be the cost difference. These AC Ryan units have come in at around R500 cheaper than the Mede8er.

Skimming through some international forums, I have learnt the following differences:

1. Mede8er has front panel buttons, PlayOn doesn't.
2. Mede8er has carry bag, PlayOn doesn't.
3. Mede8er has arguably a better fan, though no complaints about noise on PlayOn.
4. Mede8er GUI is in HD.
5. And as Lancelot pointed out, PlayOn is R500 cheaper.

1. Mede8er has front panel buttons, PlayOn doesn't. - Both have remotes :D
2. Mede8er has carry bag, PlayOn doesn't. - Not too much of an issue
3. Mede8er has arguably a better fan, though no complaints about noise on PlayOn. - Noise could be an issue if PlayOn is louder than Mede8er, will have to test
4. Mede8er GUI is in HD. - +1 for Mede8er
5. And as Lancelot pointed out, PlayOn is R500 cheaper. PlayOn is less than 2/3 the price of the Mede8er (R1099excl vs R1799excl), but this could just be the introductory offer

I guess it all comes down to features and support, i saw they just released v3 of Mede8er firmware, how many firmware updates been released for the PlayOn?

Just wonder why the Mede8er is so much more expensive yet it is "locally made", could the bag, hd screen and front buttons make such a price difference?

Do these media players, or any other on the market allow one to install a DVD/blu-ray player internally instead of having to have another unit in your media setup?

The Playon HD recognises an optical drive connected to one of the the two USB ports but will not accept one internally.

I have an old'er popcorn A110 and that can play BluRay (.mts2) and DVD (.iso) directly from hard drive.

Will the Mede8er not be able to play an optical drive via USB? I see the Playon HD supports an internal SATA drive...only HDD, not optical?

Edit: Do both support an internal HDD?

Both support internal sata up to 2TB

Bear in mind there is a mini PlayOn that doesn't support internal hdd

There is support in the last 2 firmwares i think that mentions you can plug a DVDRom into the usb host

By optical drive do you mean plugging a DVDRom internally into the player? If so, no you cant, ever.

Just want to double check something: I assumed all media players that do 1080p had high def interfaces. Is this not the case? From this thread I gather that the mede8er has, but the PlayOn not?
