Mede8er vs PlayOn!HD

Well, to me it is simply a matter of price. I'm going to recommend the PlayOn!HD to a friend, simply because his budget is around R1000.

+1

If i'd known about it i may very well have gone the playon route too, the differences listed between the 2 units would'nt really bug me much. It's a nice saving when going teh playon route!

I still think the mede8er rocks though, awesome bit of kit!

If I could get hold of one, I'd buy a Playon as well. Sadly Esquire is out of stock, and even if they had stock, I can't buy from them, and I can't find it anywhere else. :(

New stock @ Esquire Cape Town (28 units apparently) ... still going at the special price of R1099,00 excl.

@ Roger.Wilco - Your order has been collected. - Thanks for the support.

Another difference is the warranty.

Mede8er - 2years
PlayOn - 1year.

well, after reading this thread... The warranty alone is worth the extra couple of bucks!

general rule of thumb is that you get what you pay for

Im gonna be getting the Med as soon as I get around to it.

oh, and the point of the media player just sitting there? I think its also handy to be able to take it around to people's houses etc , so that bag is pretty nifty

each to their own I guess, and some people are more price aware :p

it's interesting that these are close to or cheaper than building your own HTPC:

CPU - AMD64 AM2 should do
Mobo - Whatever works with the above
RAM - 1GB
HD - 1TB or 2TB
Video Card - nVidia GT210

edit - in fact if you can get an nVidia mobo (which I have) that eats up 1080p content with no problem. Thus negating the need for the GT210.

I've had the Mede8er for 11 months now and thoroughly enjoy it. Use it daily for video and music. It is currently with Esquire though for repairs as the SD card reader stopped working. This got me into looking to buy another one while my current one is at the doctor. Currently there is a R456.00 difference between the 2 makes of players. I'm leaning towards another Mede8er because I *know* it can do all I need it to do and it's got the extra year warranty. It is tempting to save the extra R500 bucks though

To milomak - I wouldn't know the first thing about building a PC purely for home theatre, but wouldn't you then have a huge PC tower sitting in your living room? Sounds a little tacky and varsity digs'ish to me ;)

Gamer no big towers in living/tv room. You get nice small chassis for htpc's & very affordable.

Anyway Mede8ter is the bomb, with new firmware its just getting better.
I sold 2 PlayOn's to clients, they happy, except for one has no remote anymore. Esquire dont sell remote seperatly.
Dont think PlayOn has navi buttons on front panel :(

Thanks for the clarity :)

Thanks for the feedback. I don't think I've ever used the front panel buttons. Eventually I'll get the Mede8er back from repairs and I'll have one in the bedroom and the other in the living room - it'll make sense to keep my household the same and not have 2 different players

Yes its a useful little "toy".
Only problem i have is sorting movies into genre folders :p

Currently the AcRyan unit for the same price has DVR abilities

I decided on getting another Mede8er - double the warranty, I know the system and it'll fit well in my already "mede8ed" household. Picked it up this afternoon, it's in the boot and will install tonight ;)

Have any of you thought of a Dune HD Max?

I recently bought one and it really is very good. Blu-ray player, HDD bay, and network media player.
Lots of outputs and runs Full HD as well as Real3D.

A bit expensive but very well worth it (In my opinion) check out www.satstream.co.za

how accessible are these in terms of installing own OS that kind of thing?

Seeing that I can by 2 Mede8ers or 3 PlayOns for the price of the DuneHD (not the max), I do not think it is appropriate to be mentioned in this thread, unless you want us to laugh at the price you are paying?
