Hi all. I have a Xbox 360 and in the market to either buy a PS3 or Mede8er. I love the Xbox except for playing movies. I find that it doesn't play all files and can only connect a external FAT32 drive which I cannot copy HD content to as it is larger than 4gigs. I need some advice on what to buy next and pros and cons. Any suggestions would help. Thanks.

Well the PS3 will have the same media restrictions as the 360, so your only option is mede8er or similar device

For Media, I'd go....
mede8er for sure :).. I love mine, wish the wireless was a little faster when copying files though but playback over the network is perfect..
Well the only + I see to the PS3 is the blu-ray and being able to play games only created for PS3 :) but I don't own one so ya..

For Xbox 360 you can format your external to HFS+. No 4Gb FAT limitations.
You can use Macdrive to do this.

The PS3 is not even in the same league as the Mede8er when it comes to media playback. Since getting my Mede8er I have given my PS3 to my girlfriend to take home and use for the movies that do play on it. Man it is so nice not having to worry about converting and troubleshooting files that will not play. And the Mede8er will play most subtitle files so no more needing to hardsub with foreign films like I used to have to do with the PS3. What I do is format a large flash drive NTFS and use that for transferring movies form the PC to the Mede8er. Better than streaming IMO. With USB 3.0 sticks out now it will be damn fast. I also debated on getting a Mede8er because I already had a PS3, but I'm so glad I did.

I'm also the proud owner of a Mede8er and use it virtually everyday! It plays everything I throw at it, but I also want to get a PS3 so that I can watch Bluray movies on it as well as play the occasional game. I think having both is great if you can.

my set up xbox360 , linksys router and my laptop.
plays all avi file types and pretty cheap to setup, plus no issues with streaming videos even though the laptop is conected via wifi
of course if you want mkv files xbox aint gonna work :(

I used my PS3 to stream media from my pc for more than a year before I got my Mede8er.
I actually bought it as a gift for my mother in law so she could watch stuff on her tv.
I plugged it in to set it up and it never left. Streaming via the Mede8er is painless compared to the ps3.

In my view there is no contest between the 2. The PS3 is for playing games and watching Blue Ray DVD's. Though have to say that Popcorn thingy looks interesting.

The Mede8er is for everything else.

actually that can be achieved, windows 7 + Divx 7, then sync windows media centre with the xbox's media centre, and voila, you can play mkv's (not all work :( , without any transcoding needed

Are you still married?

I have an XBox & PS3. As has been said they both offer about the same streaming wise, if I could go back I'd have a PS3 & Mede8er, mkv & ISO/DVD files are the biggest downfall to me, PS3 media server for ISOs just doesnt cut it

:D yes lol. My wife loves the mede8er more than me. She never used to watch anything on the ps3 because it was always such a mission. Now she watches stuff all the time.

Not sure why everyone's knocking the PS3 as media solution, works pretty well in my opionion although never owned a Mede8er myself can't imagine how it is that much better.

Dunnow why people are complaining about the PS3 for streaming? I loaded PS3 Media Server on my laptop and to stream literally mean just booting it up and browsing it via the PS3...? Works seamlessly with the media commands on the PS3 BD Remote as well?

Mede8tor all the way for Mede8tor!

There's more to a media streamer than simply codecs and the PS3 can't compare.

I've since upgraded the firmware and haven't uploaded recent pictures, but my previous browsing was this :

And when I go into a movie, it looked like this :

Obviously fully customisable - and latest version replaces the blue wallpaper in the movie with a scene from the movie or poster.

In addition I have RCA, USB, coaxial, optical, HDMI and a host of other connections to fit into most systems - whether budget or not.
