Hi guys

what remote and tv cards are everybody using on their media centre pc's?? im looking at the compro k100 its just a remote but i dont need the tv card.

Thanks

I use a Microsoft Media Center remote, but with Media Portal. Works pefectly!

I prefer it to be honest (its also open source software, so pretty cheap :D)

and its not around a 40mb download...

Check it out!

Even the XBOX 360 MC is pretty solid - apart from the fact that if you wanna plug in an external HDD it has to be reformated to FAT32 otherwise the box won't read it. And it's a mission to get/install the plug-ins to enable the box to read avi/divx files. But for music it's great n simple to use :) wireless controller solves your remote problem too :)

1) Important thing is to make sure the TV card does the processing in hardware and does not use the main CPU.
2) You can't go wrong with a Hauppauge TV card.
3) Make sure the TV card is Windows MCE compatible. Even is you use something else now, you never know. Besides, depending on which version of Vista you use, it's included.
4) Xbox360 extender gives you that same interface as on Media Centre (including plugins)

EDIT: Just read you post again. I see you DON'T want the TV card:sick:

I have Vista Media Center with:
Hauppauge 500
Microsoft Remote and keyboard.

Trying to find an extender for the bedroom :(

I have MCE2005 and XBox360. Both in the living room.

Now I need to convince the wife that we NEED another Xbox for the bedroom ! :D
Actually, at R1999 for the 360 Arcade, it's not really that expensive anymore. Should be able to get a bargain secondhand.

Hows it work as a Media Extender? Does it mean what evers on the Media Center I can watch on the Extender...if so hows it work? With wireless?

I have the hauppauge MCE card and use mediaportal on XPpro and MCE on Vista, both have pro's and cons, the thing I like about Vista MCE is the program guide which you have to install via 3rd party first to get it to work in SA but it's awesome.

visit www.mceguide.co.za for the local guide.

Mediaportal's free anyway so you can always give it a shot.

guys media portal or Microsft Media Centre???

Personally, I think Windows MC:
1) EPG can be obtained locally. There's actually a plugin program so no need to fiddle with xmltv files etc.
2) MCE is already included in some versions of Vista.
3) There are many plugins available for Windows MC.
4) Media Center extenders.

That said, I've never used anything else.

Wired or wireless.
Wired is always better: Higher bandwidth and more stable. You will probably HAVE to use wired if you plan to watch HD content on the extender.

If you use the xbox360 as the extender, everything on you MC is available including Live TV, Recorded TV, Music, Movies etc. etc.

...I want to watch TV i(Live and recorded) n the bedroom... :) I currently do this using one of those Ellies things I bought this weekend... but it doesn't give me access to my MC.
