You want to keep the existing router where it is and then use a wifi extender plugged into the media PC?

In that case just get a wifi dongle. There's no benefit in getting an extender just to plug into your media PC.

There'll probably be info regarding what works in the net.

That's the idea. Assuming the dongle will work with xbmc...that's my original question-.. and I do appologise if it looks like I highjacked the thread.
My 2c to the OP. Media PC might be overkill for your parents but like me they will be stuck once a new format comes out. I have a wd mplayer
(Not live) and not supported anymore so header compressed mkvs freeze the unit and forget about h.264.
I'm not sure if today's players update their GUI like xbmc or the like but that's definetly the way to go.

Wouldn't a little Zotac be "better" than the HP? It looks nicer, of course it can't take a 3.5" HDD, but that's not the end of the world

The HP takes 4 3.5" HDDs, and can RAID them too. It also has 7 USB ports.
For me capacity was more important than looks as my PC is in a cupboard.
