I recently started working my first job, but I'm now considering taking out a medical aid. I'm looking for something cheap, like under R1000.

All the quotes I got are over R1000. And for hospital cover only, is just as expensive.

Commed offer there basic package called Roots. It seems quite decent for just R751 per member (depending on salary bracket). Has anyone used Commed before? And how has your experience been with them? I couldn't come across any reviews about them and the hellopeter complaints would be biased as there are only 4 reports.

Any advice on other medical aid schemes are also welcome.

Avoid discovery at all costs. Awful value, average service, and ridiculously priced. Every year without fail, your premium increases whilst your value added benefits decrease.

Sadly, I'm stuck with them.

While you're young take a hospital plan for around R1000 and then save R500 a month. This way any major medical catastrophes are covered and you can pay for a doctor out of the saving if you get a cold or something. If you have a history of bad health etc then look at a comprehensive package although it will be pricey.

On an unrelated note start saving for your retirement now. Put at least 15% pretax in an investment or RA. Get used to not having that money now so you don't have to take the hit later. You will thank me later!

Their prices are higher than other medical aids but line up the benefits side by side with another medical aids (including the actual amounts they pay/scheme tariffs) and you will see that the benefits outweighs the costs. I've had all my medical expenses covered when I was hospitalised and had 0 issues, not once did I have to contact them for anything. I supposed with every MA you will get good and bad reviews.

Like everyone though we will complain because the premium increases are higher than inflation which makes it unsustainable in the long run. I suspect they do this so they can slowly work themselves up to the top class clients that have a better chance of paying high premiums while being able to keep themselves healthier and less likely to have illnesses such as AIDS etc which drains the medical funds.
