Hi

The medical aid laws have changed dramatically in the last few years.
If you want unlimited hospital coverage you will have to pay over 3k per month on a decent med aid. ie. momentum or discovery.

The problem is not the hospitals account but what the specialists charge you.

Most specialists in hospital charge a minimum of 300% of medical aid rates but the med aids pay 200% on a decent option.

This is why you apply for things like admed gap, which then covers the balance that the medical aid doesnt..
My g/f sorts all this out for me, sadly she has taken today off and is probably making dishes at home, I will ask her tomorrow however and post relevant details.

Medical aids just another way to extort money from the public. Amazing how in this day and age we require admed gap to cover what the medical aid doesn't. Give it a year or 2 and we will have a top up insurance to cover what the admed doesn't!! Premiums increase monthly while the benefits decrease..

Discovery Classic Core - it's just a hospital plan. Also allows you to sign up for Vitality, which has loads of benefits. I used to be with Fedhealth, but damn they are gone expensive. I left them end of 2008, and joined Discovery beginning of 2009. No regrets (yet).

I think he's missing the plot a little bit here. Specialists, by law, are allowed to charge a maximum of 300% the normal hospital going rate. Not all do - but they can.

I'm on momentum and I'm covered for 300% while still paying less than R1k a month for hospital coverage along with all the added goodies. Only thing that isn't covered is dental and GP visits - but I have a saver plan that sorts that out too, so I don't have to deal with money when my tooth hurts or I'm flu stricken. Even my pharmacy bill & my recent eye test at the optometrist goes off there with no hassle.

Geez why is it medical aids charge based on income?

What a load of shyte. I wonder if putting 1k a month into a call account is better than paying for medical aid?

It's only expensive until you need it. :/

My mom & aunt's kidney transplant operation cost R200k. They paid out in full.

Dear friend,

Please check your policy again.

THe rules changed effective 01 Jan 2010.
Incentive pays only 200%.

Only summit pays 300% and it is over 3k.

Not all specialists charge max 300%.

Most private Anethasists charge well over 500% +

Anaesthetists. It's not like you get to pick them either is it? Maybe that's one of the reasons they can charge what they like and get away with it, because they know that the patient will see them the first time just before the operation and the patient is not going to go "um you charge what??" because the operation will just get cancelled...and no patient is going to risk that after all the drama of just getting that far...

Thanks mate!

It seems my info's been somewhat outdated. I appreciate the head's up!

You only read the fine print when you need to claim.
The important thing I learnt from my experience is to negotiate with your specialist beforehand if it is possible.

This is the only way to ensure they can charge the maximum that your medical aid option allows for.
They have slight guilt when they have to face you and tell you we are greedy.

Yep, it's a massive scam... but those are the kind of questions you should be asking your doc before the op... if it is a scheduled op.

I am sure the doctor gets a bit of back hand as well because they never mention that cost before the OP :D.
