Hi,

I have a Mega 200 VWR modem/router from Telkom on my DSL 4 Mb line. My problem is with the wireless coverage which I am trying to extend as it loses connection intermittently 3 rooms away. Two rooms away is fine.

Can I use some kind of wireless extension (indoor antenna) on this router?

I currently have a PCMCIA Netgear NEXT wireless card in the laptop. Should I maybe try a USB type Netgear card with a USB extension cable of say 3 m? Would that help? Maybe another brand?

Or should I maybe buy a linksys (or some other brand) wireless router to put after the Mega 200 which could handle an external antenna?

My other newer notebook (built-in wi-fi) has better connectivity from the 200 VWR.

Have you tried getting a larger Ariel. Attach that to the device, if it provides enough gain then you should have better converge. You could use something called a "pig-tail" to connect an unauthorized Ariel to the device.

I've had a similiar problem living on the edge of town. Upgraded to the Billion and problem solved, for now. Thanks teLKOM

Thanks. Which Billion router did you get? I have ordered an arial now:
D-Link ANT24-0700 2.4GHz Omni-Directional 7dBi Indoor Antenna

Reviews on Amazon etc looks good. Will give it a try, bought it for R300.

I have the answer,

It'll only work if it has an arial.

Grab a coke tin, a fanta, sprite, iron brew... and so on will work too.

Cut the top off, then slice down the sides leaving a gap of about 1.5cm between each slice.

Fan the sliced parts out. You should now have something that looks like a fancy piece if abstract, futuristic art that you could probably sell for a packet but more importantly you have a range extender.

Make a small hole in the bottom and place it over your Ariel, then aim the space age contraption in the direction of the room that is not getting enough signal and walla, your very own, home made, art deco, range extender ;)

The Telkom Mega200VWR is apparently a Billion router - just search this website for the details. Many of the Billion models have a Tx Power setting that you can just increase to extend the range. Check your manual to see whether this function is available on the Mega200VWR. You could also consider upgrading to the Billion firmware but read the threads on this topic very carefully so that you don't 'brick' your router. Alternatively just make a simple cardboard parabolic reflector to increase the range. http://www.freeantennas.com/projects/template/index.html
You can purchase cheap interior WiFi antennas from www.cables.co.za - look at the pricelist for more details.

Here is a link to the manual for the Mega200VWR. See page 36 for details on increasing the Tx Power.
