Melamine

Lancelot well done for degrading the thread. Lets make it personal.
Typical, maybe go read the forum suggestions section on attitudes when debating.

Hey, it's your thread and you did it, so don't blame me! This thread was about melamine in food products, you turned it into this..

Exactly, too much happening in this bloody corrupt place.

Some people's inability to concentrate really baffles me...

KwaZulu-Natal Health department spokesman Leon Mbangwa said the batches, which were manufactured in June and July 2008, contained melamine levels of 1.6mg/kg in the Lactogen product, while the Nido sample contained 3mg/kg.

"This is more than the internationally accepted level of 1mg/kg for foodstuffs intended for infants and young children, such as infant formula, applied by the department of health as a cut-off level,” said Mr Mbangwa.

I don't understand the ' legal limit ' issue as regards melamine.

As I understand it melamine has no benefit other than providing false protein readings.

If true, why do we accept any amount of this useless but potentially dangerous product in our foodstuffs ?

Is melamine generally included on products ' this contains ' list ?

Great, so now u have me worried about dog sh_t in food.
What do you know about it?

I'll probably get some emails about that now. :)

ha ha yeah well they don't test for it the bloody corrupt government officials! :)

But I think there is a simple test for this one.... sniff the food before you eat it! ;)

TO REPEAT : As stated above there was no need to test for melamine in food products as it should not be there. You will find they probably do not test for sulphuric acid, arsenic, dog sh_t either as it should not be there to start with. But they are now getting the necessary tests set up :

By the way Marine, your credibility was out the window when it became apparent that your knowledge on this subject is limited to a brief conversation with an anti fur marcher! Your motive is not to take over the world (you clearly watch too many cartoons!) but to knock this country. It has been clearly demonstrated elsewhere. But this is off topic so let's stick to responding to your posts shall we?

You did not display any facts either but for the defense of your precious Government you so zealously will defend at all costs.

Maybe this must remain as inspiration for your course

Melamine infants still sick
Last updated: Friday, November 21, 2008
Over one thousand Chinese infants are still in hospital receiving treatment for kidney damage caused by tainted milk, China's Health Ministry said on Thursday, more than two months after the scandal broke.

Feel proud to defend the South African Epic saga of this scandal.

BTW: The reason there is a health and safety department is not to consume donuts daily and become fat, as they do, their job is to protect the citizens against exactly what they failed to do and that was/is to ensure the food we import is really save for consumption.

Dont worry the FDA say it is fine, they may also add cyanide but hey if they say it ok then it must be so??

Read my post and link above about traces of melamine. I do not quite get it myself but apparently it does exist naturally in food stuffs. My understanding is it might not be added but might be present in the feed for the cows (which is also alarming!) etc.

 anti fur marchers are not credible now ?

Why is anyone with concerns about our planet, what we eat, what limited resources we destroy , viewed as a nutter ?

It's thanks to those bunny-huggers that we still have whales, dolphins, forests and at last some attention to non-fossil fuels and climate change.

Otherwise we would leave our fate in the Palins and Cheneys of the world.

The one loves posting stories about China (a first world country apparently) and making out that they are about this country and the other says that adding information to a thread topic is trolling... fair enough!

I hope people who actually are parents found the information about the actual products that have been found to contain too much melamine in them useful. To those who just love to take a swipe at this country, good luck to you too. Just remember it could be worse, you could live in China where they actually put the melamine in the milk!

I'm off to see Father Christmas with my kids now... but I do not doubt that some of you would have them believe he does not actually exist!

From what we are hearing from China, acute renal failure and death. After the pet food contamination scandal what did our governmental officials do to protect us? In 2002 the UN report concluded contamination to the human food supply was unlikely.

Q: What about people?

A: The 2002 UN report concluded the potential risk posed by melamine is low. However, the UN based that conclusion on the slim chance that consumers would even come into contact with the chemical.

I don't know if it's as good as it sounds, but look what Malaysia is doing:

http://thestar.com.my/news/story.asp?file=/2008/11/2/focus/2436084&sec=focus

In light of melamine-tainted food being uncovered almost daily in many countries, the Malaysian government says it is doing all it can to ensure safety of food here.

AT any other time, the UnipeQ laboratory in Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), Bangi is but one of the 264 facilities accredited by the Department of Standards Malaysia as a testing laboratory.

Then the melamine issue reared its head, and as one of the four private facilities recognised by the Health Ministry for melamine testing, the laboratory is simply buzzing with activity.

In the past week alone, it has been swamped with requests to test for the chemical – sometimes more than 100 items a day.

The lab has been receiving – among others – biscuits, snack foods and also raw ingredients such as eggs and ammonium bicarbonate. Some food processing companies have even voluntarily sent in processing equipment and packaging materials to be tested, just in case of cross-contamination.

However, Dr Ismail assures that the Malaysian government is doing all it can to ensure that the food sold in the country is safe to eat.

Currently, all products from China imported into the country before Aug 6 this year are subject to inspection.

“We are fully aware. Do not panic. The ministry is taking necessary steps to make sure food being sold is safe for consumption. We will seize and test before releasing it,” he says.

Idris says the authorities try to allay the fears of the public by announcing that the levels of melamine in certain foods are within “permissible levels” but reckons this term should be questioned.

“Melamine is a synthetic chemical. It does not occur naturally in food. Should permissible levels be set for substances that are not naturally occurring in food?” he asks.

“By law, there should be zero tolerance for melamine as well as other synthetic toxic chemicals in food, rather than waiting for all the evidence to come in, which might be too late. Harm would already be done, sometimes irreparably,” adds Idris.

But it is almost impossible for the public to take any realistic precautions themselves when it comes to products on the shelves, as it is impossible for people to know which foods contain melamine, says Idris.

ha ha you drew that conclusion Dave! I merely said that his "knowledge on this subject is limited to a brief conversation with an anti fur marcher"!

Gawd, I have always heard about Bullshiit baffles brains. Now that statement just got meaning and you confirmed you are baffled by your own participation in this thread so that must mean exactly what the phrase says. Who did what in this thread? Every post i made you tried to nullify with Pro SA garbage and you called the new guidelines of the debate, namely products in SA. When I gave you the information you, not so unlike a SA politician changed the song so you can remain singing it. What a pathetic burden to carry all your life, namely protecting/defending the real criminals in our society. Vote’s for Zuma assured.

May be a different country but we are importing all their prodcuts and also learning on how to use this tactic to maximise profits. Although this probably could never happen in SA I mean we dont ever have price fixing scandals for one. ;) We are definitely above doing illegal and unethical things like China may do.

Didn't the owners of that Chinese factory go to trial and get executed?
Think I read about it somewhere.

We should import parts of the Chinese legal system as well.:)
