So im getting married in July and need to decide on my wedding band/ring. My fiance's ring is platinum so I would like mine to be of a similar colour, eg: white gold.

I dont know much about metals and am getting a bit confused by all the options. Im not going with platinum for 2 reasons, it's price and because it's apparently a soft metal so although it's fine for a woman's ring it's usually not recommended for a man. I then considered titanium but I think that will be too dark in colour. So now im trying to decide between 18ct and 9ct white gold. What's the difference other than price? Apparently 18ct is marginally stronger. Im not sure how the two compare in terms of their colour and how long it takes the "white" to fade.

9ct is cheaper, so I am obviously considering that factor. But it's more important for me to get a long lasting quality ring that keeps it's colour better so if 18ct is the way to go then...

Anyway, im clueless about this stuff other than the 50 different things the myriad of jewellers are telling me. Please help

Who told you it's soft?? Someone has been feeding you BS.

IT's the most expensive because it's the hardest metal to work with. they do not like resizing it

18 and 24 is the softest and will grind away before the vows does.. Gold can be beaten down to one molecule thick it's the softest and 9ct the strongest because it contains the most alloys..

( once apon a time i studied this )

Ah I see. Thanks. So for a mens ring that will hopefully be roughly the same colour as her platinum ring (at least to start with) and needs to be relatively strong, youd suggest going for 9ct white gold?

I wish I had bought a titanium ring. I had no idea at the time I chose my gold band but apparrently I'm hard on rings.

You get different shades titanium as well. Mine has 2 tones, a very light almost silver and a darker shade.

Even stainless steel is nice. Thats a good option if like me you keep losing rings...

I always like the idea of Titanium, but I thought it was only available in a dark grey colour. But if that's not the case then that's definitly an option.

As far as I know Titatanium would be more expensive than 9ct white gold right?

Mila, thanks for the links. Reading them now.

Go for stainless steel and a flat screen TV rather...

You worried about a ring? Dude, worry about the ball and chain you gonna be wearing for the rest of your life! :(

I've got a gold 18ct, and a white gold 18ct ring (engagement and wedding band). Both are hard enough for 'normal' use. 9ct is even harder.

Make sure the ring you get looks aesthetically pleasing through your nose boss... cos that's where it's going to be the day after you get back from honeymoon ;)

Oh ja ... and titanium FTW

lol, thanks for that

I definitly like Titanium. In that link posted earlier it sais Titanium rings generally cant be resized later. But I guess since I dont plan on getting fat any time soon that's not really and issue.

What is your views on wedding bands with diamonds?
95% of men don't have diamonds in their band.
I have thought about getting one with a diamond. Just a very small diamond and not one of those bands that is square on top. I want it rounded all the way around.

I am going for platinum BTW. Same as engagement ring for the GF.

I would want exactly what it says ... a wedding band. Just a broad ring with our names engraved on the insides. For both of us. Her engagement ring can be something more ornamental.

And it must be gold. Like in yellow gold.

None of those other bland looking metals will do.

I think that's down to personal preference. Like you said, i've never known of a mens ring with a diamond in it.

Another one of the big reasons im not getting platinum even though my fiance's ring is platinum is because of how shiny it is. Her ring really sparkles,...and I dont think that looks right on a man. Well, not on me anyway. I want the white'ish silver colour, but I dont want it sparkling off every ray of light that hits it. Just a normal band is fine for me. Just my personal preference though.
