Hi, i am planning to buy a Second hand Merc or BMW that is under 100K on the clock i only have R100k

any advise would be appreciated, and by the way its my first car.

i am looking for something like MERC C-class 2007 - 2010 or BMW 3 series

since this will be my first car, please also advise in terms of
transmission,
problems i might face,
the costs ,
how far long can i go if i get a 100k car e.g maybe after 200k on the clock the car will start giving me problems.

Thank you for your advises.

You won't get an under 100k Merc for under a hundred grand...

And even if you do, the maintenance will bankrupt you.

3-series from ~2008-2009 offer pretty good value and they were often used by reps so you can get them at a decent price. You'll battle to find one with under 100 thousand kms at that age, especially for that price. They're superbly reliable but when something does go wrong expect to pay BMW prices.

Mercs on the other hand weren't noted for being well built at that stage (still aren't, AFAIK).

But @smkungfu is right though - for your first car, better to start off with a Mazda2 or Figo or something. Be much cheaper to fuel, to maintain and to insure.

Got a Immaculate BMW 130 I M Sport. It's in excellent condition with FSH at agents.

Merc or BMW
Are you retired and want to drive around in luxury without feeling a single offending bump in the road on the way to your country club golf date? Buy Merc.

Do you actually want to enjoy an engaging drive? Buy BMW.

For a first car and a budget of 100k though, buy something else.

i can try to up the budget to R150K but aleast 110K max on the clock..

Spoken like someone who has never actually driven a Merc..

I'd choose a Merc over BMW any day after owning both brands for over 30 years. The ride is smoother and if you take care of it, it will last decades.

For 100k I would look for a LCI (2009-2011) BMW 320d exclusive.

You wont find one with under 100 000km on the clock, but neither will you find any other model of BMW you would want to keep long term, or Merc for that matter.

Make sure it has a full service history and that the damper pulley has been replaced, and you are all good to go.

The exclusive model will be cheap, cheaper on tyres, and offer great ride quality over an Msport. Added advantage you will get insane consumption and ampe power.

Last note: what ever you do dont buy a 320i E90

I went secondhand BMW and I'm very happy with my F30 3 Series. You won't find one for R100K though ... my car's retail value is around R200K currently with 98k on the clock.

You go older than that and you'll be getting the naturally aspirated E90 3 Series, which everybody seems to agree is a dog (I was warned off considering one when I was looking).

The new G20 is launching now for about R600K, so don't worry about that :D

I'll echo what everybody else says: do NOT get a BMW as your first car. Not unless you can afford its maintenance (around R5K/service and R3K/tyre).
