MERC Vs BMW

I actually own both cars..
Merc is more refined, smooth. Its is front heavy hence its like driving a boat. Its a cruiser. But not very spacious in the back.
BMW, the new F30 is superb, engine wise and gearbox, a lot more sportier than Merc, and much smoother than previous E90, but not as smooth as Merc.
I would choose Merc for the wife and BMW for me (but thats also cos i like speed now and again).
BTW, also owned Audi many years ago, and it hasn't evolved at all, still the same.

No don't get me wrong, I love Merc more than BMW. I would just like some of that aggressive AMG looks on the new C200 then I'm sold. But Audi over everything else.

hahaha that's one of the things that really irks me. It's like putting a flipping touring wing on your honda civic. Don't make it look like an AMG if it has less than 300hp .... ;)

As for the value thing, suits me fine. I bought my AMG for relative peanuts compared to what it cost new...

OP your question is very difficult to answerer, because you get the BMW fans and the Merc fans. So they are just going to tell you whats the best based on what they are a fan of. Im a die hard BMW fan.

1 Series Coupé any day

98 model BMW E46 328i MSport, manual.
270 000km

They may be cheap but by the time they're sold there's a lot of maintenance stuff due.
In 6 months I've had the subframe repaired, full break service (rotors and pads replaced), oil and filter change, engine and tranny mounts swapped, and replaced the aux fan after it failed.
Think I've finally caught up but damn I spent 60% of what I paid for the actual car. Drives like new for a fraction of the cost of a new car though.

Still, it's an awesome car to drive. Wonderful handling, heaps of power and I love the way it looks.

Oh and I still need to get the aircon re-gassed. I'm in New Zealand though so it's not as urgent here haha.

Only BMW people ask the question which is better? That's because they're into image and appearances and care what other people think. That's why they have iPhones and wear clothing that displays the brand.

Mercedes-Benz people, on the other hand, aren't much interested in what other people think about their car or their image. They know what they prefer and quietly and unpretentiously putter about in their horseless carriage. They are much more modest.

:p

LOL, that is actually pretty accurate.

I have always personally felt that the order of build quality and comfort is Merc, BMW, Audi and it depends what you can afford and also what you are after.

If you are after a sporty car and have the money then the higher end AMG range is amazing, otherwise M and RS ranges are pretty equal.

If you are not looking for a sporty car, then its basically down to build quality and comfort (Not many people shopping in this segment are too hung up on economy).

Note I only through Audi into the mix as I am an Audi fan

I think the reason that mercs hold their value better than the bmws is that merc owners don't rush to trade in their cars when the new model comes out...

The A class is stunning, but it is overpriced. R340k for the entry level? Madness.

The A-Class is incredibly over priced.

Looking at a fully spec'd A45 AMG you will be paying just south of R1 million, for a hot hatch with a 2.0T this is CRAZY

Seriously!
Maybe 10 years ago that was true.

^This.

Upfront, let me say that I own a BMW 335i M-Sport. I do have a biased opinion so keep that in mind when you read what follows.

I bought my car because I love fast cars and I need a Sedan. The 335i offers performance above that of its equivalent German counterparts; Audi Quatro 3.2 TFSI and Merc C350. This is true for almost all the BMW models and their equivalent German cars, even the new BMW 320i beats out the competition.

The BMW is a better driver's car than the Merc, hands down. Go read or watch any car review about BMW’s 3 Series, it has won best car in their segment for many years running. However, if you do prefer class, and comfort over an awesome driving experience, then the Merc is definitely the car for you. My friend bought a 2014 C180 Avantgarde last month and it drives like a dream You really feel like you’re driving a cloud. I haven’t had a chance to drive the AMG equivalent but I can say for a fact that it’s a LOT more comfortable than a BMW.

After having both i would say the merc over the bmw. Both of the cars were never the latest model at the time of ownership ie. the E46 when the E90 was the latest and the W203 when the W204 was the newest. The thing that sways me the most is the classy/vintage style of the merc as opposed to the innovation/sportiness of the bmw. When the merc was 6 years old it felt no different from the day i bought it. When the bmw was 6 years old it felt old and outdated.

I am in my 20's.

I know what I prefer, which is android, non branded clothing and BMW... But then I don't go around asking others which is better cos I don't really give a damn what they think anyway.
