MERC Vs BMW

Just my 3cents.
I have had the privilege to have made that decision last year.

Coming from a 2008 BMW 120i and driven my brothers 2010 BMW 330d i was sold to go out hunting for a BMW. Until i test drove the new F30 320d and 330d 5times and the interior and comfort seemed to be missing something. I then walked into Mercedes for test drove 2013 C200 CDI and ended up buying a 2013 C250 CDI avantgarde(although amg kit looks good, it makes the vehicle extremely low for speed bumps), having to go sideways like a nut! The only super great thing about the BMWs are their diesel engines. According to me they seem to be smoother. My C250 CDi seems to be a bit noisier, but once it pulls out of 1st and 2nd it goes like a dream and very powerful. Another great factor is the fact that MERC has the new 100kms/6yr maintenance plans.

With all that being said, i would take the MERC all over again!!

...and when they launch the new C shortly, that decision will become even easier. Looks like it will blow the F30 straight out of the water. Stunning looking car.

Mercs are starting to produce stunning cars. Saw a CLA45 today and it really caught my eye.

New C class not too shabby either.

Merc would be my pick for sure. Getting a bit pricey tho.

I actually saw one too today, for the first time, here in Cape Town. I moved out of the fast lane and it passed in a flash.

All cars are getting pricey... or I should rather say, even more pricey.

EDIT: I actually saw the A45.

Auto all the way. Unless it's a second. At that you won't use for a daily drive.

Dare I say look at Lexua or even Jaguar for something truly different.

I don't have a preference but I have owned 2 335i's and a 528i and now two 320i's.. On every single occasion I have shopped around, and every time I left a Merc Dealership I felt like assaulting the salesman. They are arrogant and rude, and their trade in offers are a joke. Audi's I have owned on 2 occasion an A4's and a Q5 3.0d when it was first introduced..Save some money and buy the equivalent VW it will be cheaper and have more standard features and will drive exactly the same. Oh and after sales is a joke at Audi.

I think over time (in my experience) a merc proves to be of better build quality.
Over the years i have owned numerous bmw's - 3, 5 & 7 series.
I have had 2 mercs.

I still have the one merc which i keep as a 3rd car for friends & family to use when in cape town.
And that is because i simply refuse to sell it. The car, an elderly E280, now with 300k on the clock still drives like a new car.
It is smooth & silent, very responsive & feels solid & safe on the road. Aside from the cruise control, everything still works perfectly. The car may not have been started for a month or 2, but when taken for a quick run to exercise her, she starts without fail & is ready to roll.
It no longer receives regular servicing. Every 12 months it has a very basic service involving the changing of various fluids, filters etc, and the garage check other components known to need replacing at certain points in the life of this model.
I have 1000% confidence in this car, more so than my other 2, neither of which are more than 3 yrs old, or done over 100k.

I have absolute certainty, that none of the bmw's would have held out as well.

I have owned 3 BMW's over the years, and 1 Merc...

The Merc sold me on the brand instantly, its smooth, and can just cruise along 95% of the time, when you need speed you just put your foot down and it gathers speed effortlessly.

I may consider a Jag in the not too distant future since they're making some amazing looking cars these days.

why did they select that specific vehicle and what are the pros and cons having purchased these vehicles?

2005 E90 325i Exclusive Package Manual, bought it brand new for 285K plus 70K options. Reason was BMW’s good aftersales service and VWSA pissing me off with my previous Golf 4 GTi.

Pros: Good aftersales service, straight six engine, perceived brand status, 4 years ownership with only one issue on built quality.

Cons: 17” Runflat tires. I hated them in 2005. They were first generation, harsh ride and a little expensive, manual gearbox was crap. The door handle trim was peering off but fixed on warranty.

2007 E92 335i Coupe M-sport Steptronic Auto, bought it second hand in 2009 for 450k. While servicing my 2005 E90 325i, I was shown this car, test drove it and never wanted to let go.

Pros: Best looking 3 Series in my opinion (besides the E92 M3), built quality improved, runflat ride quality much improved (19” runflats were better than previous 17” runflats). Auto Gearbox is solid, Prof Sat Nav, Harman Kardon sound were standard items. Sounds and handles like a dream.

Cons: Rear tires don’t last long (25 000kms on average). It also guzzles petrol. Last but not least, with a 335i N54/N55 engine you run a risk of reoccurring High Pressure Fuel Pump problem.

2010 E93 335i Convertible M-Sport Double Clutch Transmission, bought it second hand in 2011 for 650k. Reason I bought it is convertible and 335i engine.

Pros: Great engine sound, Double Clutch Transmission gear box is amazing, 3 Piece metal folding top (not everyone’s taste) but often the biggest attraction and admiration versus any BMW I owned.

Cons: Slower than 335i Coupe, not as good in handling like a Coupe and Sedan. Guzzles petrol because you often wanna drive fast rom robot and rev it.

The biggest question is : Auto or Manual and of course the pros and cons to this.

Auto anyday.

I drive the BMW’s with Double Clutch Transmission Auto and Audi A3 with manual. The manual gearbox is useful when I want to have control over the car which is 20% of the time. Auto is useful when I just want to drive which is 80% of the time.

Double Clutch Transmission is the best Auto/Manual. This is the first Auto gearbox with proper manual mode.

I suggest you go test drive both and you will feel which seats are the most comfortable.
I'm not going to mention engine/power as everyone knows which one is best.

I don't think comfortable should get the highest rating, for me I wanna feel the road through my hands (steering), ass (seat) and feet (pedals) so the more tactile feedback the better. Pointless having 300kW but it feels like a boat.
