RESIDENTS couldn’t believe their eyes when they saw a “mermaid” flying in the sky.

The amazing sight appeared over Mabopane in Tshwane on Tuesday afternoon.

To prove they weren’t making it up, community members sent a photo to Daily Sun.

One resident, who didn’t want to be named, said he was putting groceries in his car at the Morula Sun Shopping Complex parking lot.

“I heard people gasp and scream. There was a mermaid in the air. It came from the direction of the Morula Sun Casino,” he said.

“When I was a child, we were told a mermaid lived in a nearby river. I thought it was just a fairytale to scare us away from the river but I was proved wrong.”

Another resident said the mermaid came out of the water when angry. She had heard the mermaid used to turn into a white woman and complain to the casino manager about the noise.

“She would tell him to keep the noise down as her children couldn’t sleep and then go back to the river,” she said.

The weather services’ Christina Thaela said: “If a person sees a certain image it could be their imagination.”

Sangoma Makhosi Dumezweni said mermaids lived underwater.

“When it is angry it can destroy homes and buildings but it will never harm a human being. If people are scared of the mermaid, a traditional healer can speak to it and ask it to calm down,” he said.

There you have it then.

The only ones flying high are the publishers of this "newspaper".

I think the mermaid should go live in the Nkandla fire pool. Don't think she would be disturbed much.
