Messi vs Ronaldo

ALL players have to drop back and defend!
It would be like playing with 10 men if you had one player who thinks his job is only up front.

Every player needs to defend!

Imagine a player who thinks that it is his job just to attack and not defend. As a player, when the ball is lost, its your job to try and get the ball back irrespective of your position. You need to mark your player.

I agree that every player should contributes in defence. BUT it reminds me of that debate we had about Rooney creating goals for other strikers. Some said the striker's roles is not to create goals, but to score 'em?

The debate was that strikers are measured on how many goals they net in a season and NOT how many assists they provide.

Nobody remembers how many assists Cantona provided, nobody remember Fowler cos he could assist, nobody remembers a striker cos he could setup a goal.

They remember strikers who SCORE goals.

Seems like that R200 looks like it might be mine if u look at the stats.

Goals

Although not really classed as out-and-out strikers, each player has contributed a healthy amount of goals for their sides. Each total is from league, cup and European competition games combined:

Cristiano Ronaldo – 97 from 269 appearances

Lionel Messi – 42 goals from 110 appearances

On paper, then, Messi comes out on top, with a goal in almost every other game, compared to Ronaldo’s 1-in-3 average and Fabregas’ low total.

True but let's not forget Ronaldo was an idiot when he first joined Manchester United. Whenever he got the ball he always tried to score which is why every United supporter including me hated him. Only about 2 seasons ago did he start playing like he is now. In terms ok who is better it's hard to say. Ronaldo is faster and a better shooter imo but Messi is better on the ball. I would still take Ronaldo over Messi though.

Ronaldo folds on the big stage. Not one game did he stand up in the CL when faced against big clubs to show his worth.

I will take Messi hands down.

Whats his Champions league stats?

Yes. When United play AC Milan in the semi two seasons ago, Ronaldo never touched the ball.

When they played Barca last season - you could count on your hands how many times he touched the ball.

The final - he played against Chelsea - which you can kinda understand why he did well. United played Chelsea so many times.

...but when he plays against any top club in Europe, Ronaldo folds and dissapears for the night.

Another interesting point. Messi led the CL goal scoring stats - even though he didnt play all the matches.

only in the final did Ronaldo overtake Messi.

Did he score in the final, all I remember was his miss!:p
Reminds me of the tortoise and the hare story in Primary school, it only matters who finished first. Ronaldos goals counted, thats why they won the competition.

Ya, he scored. He deserves all the accolades he is getting. Not insulting him as a player.

...but it is very evident that he doesnt show up for the big games.

Well its kinda obvious why....
If you play for the opposition and know you going to play against Ronaldo, you not gonna let him run free are you? Most star players end up being bogged down in big games, Ronaldo often has 2 - 3 players marking him.
So he might not be scoring but he's presence is still felt.

In the big games Ronaldo wasnt marked any different. He was marked the same way Messi was.

Messi made a massive impact.

But not a big enough impact to beat Man United in the semi's?

Was his first game back. What do u expect if a team is hell bent on camping in their own box.

Barca had more than 70% possesion at Old trafford!!!! That alone is remarkable.

SAF was insulted after the match for playing ridiculously boring football. But it is what won them the game, so they can have it.

The English press printed that a ''Half fit Messi is better than a fully fit Ronaldo''

My honest opinion
Messi is better. Is as simple as that. He might not have scored 42 goals this season but he has proved that he is better in the games that really matter. Against Manchester he was amazing. Ronaldo was clearly outshone. What better way to compare them than in a game between their teams ? Ronaldo played very poorly. And with a good team behind him, Messi would have won the game against United. He doesn't need silly step-overs to get past several players and to create spaces and he definitely does not dive or cheat. At 20, Messi is more mature than Ronaldo and he is also more mature than most of the players older than him. He is the real successor of Maradona and he still has time to win a few individual award and who knows...maybe the world cup...I consider Messi the best player of his generation

Which proves that Messi's long range shooting is poor. He had many opportunities to take shots from long range but he never did.

If u camp 11 players in a box - the worlds best long range shooter also wont score.

I remember half-time they had a interview with Ferguson in the tunnel, he was saying they gonna come out attacking in the 2nd half but all they did was sit in the box and defend for their life lol

Messi picked up man of the match in both games, the English press were amazed at him.People couldn't stop talking about him after the game.

One comment from the commentators that I remember well is that when messi touched the ball the crowd at old trafford went silent, as if they were holding their breath in anticipation.
