Messi vs Ronaldo

Messi Is Out Of This World - Robben

Arjen Robben has declared today that Lionel Messi is the best player in the universe before acknowledging that he can improve some aspects of his own game...

Here is a nice video I found of all 42 of Ronaldo's goals last season.

What I noticed was the fact that he scored every sort of goal you could possibly ask for -headers
-tap-ins
-glorious free-kicks
-penalties
-solo runs
-inside the box
-outside the box
-one-touch goals
-one with a backheel :)

I don't think you could ask for more than that. And yes, I think he would be as good at a club not as great as United.

Busy loading the link now. Im interested in seeing how many goals he scored - tap-ins compared to how many solo goals.

Just watched that link. Thx. Always pondered how much he scored through his own ability and how much he scored via the team.

I counted 14 tap-ins, 7 penalties, 7 headers, 8 solos and 6 free kicks.

Some brilliant goals - most of them were due to the team.

Something also worth mentioning - take Ronaldo's free kicks and penalty goals away and then Torres and Abedayor would have scored more than him.

Interesting.

I have a bet with a friend that Messi will outshine Ronaldo this season. He refuses to make that bet and wants to make a bet that Ronaldo will score more goals than Messi this season.

I think its an unfair bet cos they are firstly midfielders and their primary reason for being in the team is to open defences, make plays, setup goals etc.

I made the bet anyway - R200

Who do you think will score more goals this season between the two?

Its also important to note, that Messi does not take free kicks.

Seems like i will be R200 richer at the end of the season :D

Where are all the Ronaldo supporters that believed he was better than Messi? Why are they so quiet? I was bold enough to say Messi was better than Ronaldo last season even tho Ronaldo was scoring.

Seems like Ronaldo fans have dissapeared and even they have realised they were wrong to compare the two ;)

I think they are bored of the whole thing.

At the end of the day, it is a matter of personal opinion and choice. You saw the video I linked you of all Ronaldo's goals. A more all-round performance from a midfielder you will never again see in your life.

How can they be bored. They felt so strongly about Ronaldo being better than Messi. He just picked up the best player in the world title and you say they are bored. LoL

I think they have just come to realise that they were wrong ;)

I think they were tired of arguing with you to be honest. You were on some kind of personal quest against Ronaldo for some reason. I understand that you have money riding on this bet of yours, but it is all getting a bit tired now.

It is always going to be hard to compare two players who play in completely contrasting leagues. I don't know why your friend even made the bet with you. Many people would have problems with whether the leagues are equal in terms of quality. So scoring 20 goals in one league may not mean the same as doing the same in another. I am sure you would not rate a striker who scored 20 goals a season for Rangers of Celtic the same way you would someone who did that in the EPL for example.

La liga has dominated the rankings as the top league in europe since the UEFA coefficients stats started (winning it a record 15 times), also its the only league to win the uefa cup and champs league in the same year.

So comparing the EPL to la-liga is not like comparing a scottish league to the epl.

Disagree with that, I think Gerrard comes to mind.

I just cannot remember one season where he was so influential and contributed to the team in every way possible...

Sure, Gerrard is the anchor of the Liverpool team ,as Lampard is for Chelski. But I have never seen either of them dominate a season like Ronaldo did last year.

What I was really referring to was the word 'Complete' you used to describe Ronaldo's performance. Yes it was excellent and might not be repeated again for a long time but he did not contribute in terms of tackling, winning possession back, getting stuck in, tracking back.

Gerrard for example, can do everything Ronaldo can do and more. He in my view is a complete midfielder.

Lampard however is not as he can't win a ball to save his life. He is known as an Attacking Midfielder as is Ronaldo.

Of coarse Ronaldo was far superior than anyone else in terms of attacking football. That I can't argue with.

I see. Fair enough comments.
I guess that is the best performance by an attacking midfielder then.

To be truly a great player, and truly complete as a midfielder, then like you said, you need to lead your team, track back and defend, win possession etc...and you have to do this for more than just one season. Something which both Gerrard and Lampard have managed for quite some time now.

I guess it is hard to find anyone to compare Ronaldo's last season to really.

Sure, Gerrard is a good tackler, good at winning possession but he has got nothing on Ronaldo when it comes to skills and beating players...

It seems as Ronaldo is starting to fade already. Who do you think will be the next best thing in the EPL?

Lol. Van Persie..lol

Gerrard is bossing from midfield this season. last time I checked(2-3 weeks ago) he already had 15 goals in all competitions.

A fit Fernando Torres will be the next big thing.

RE Ronaldo: everybody knows his heart is in Madrid.
