So, they started trenching outside our complex already, laying fibre cables from the other location behind us that they're already providing for - in fact, they've already re-laid most of the paving they dug up. That was pretty fast. :)

The next part (terminating the units) I assume will take a bit longer.

A question for those with experience with fibre termination boxes, from still a relative n00b.

The provisional plans Metrofibre forwarded to us, indicates that the termination boxes will be mounted on the outside walls of most homes, i.e. visible from communal areas, which will not be approved.

So, where do you guys have your termination boxes mounted, and were they also done for non-visibility reasons? Would it not be possible for the boxes and their wires/cables/pipes to be totally invisible from outside the home?

There are existing sleeves etc., so I think their planning may have been structured around that.

They did ours inside each house. They brought the fibre in through the existing telephone ducts. The termination box is a small white box.

Thanks.

My Telkom line comes from the street, via cable, into my roof.

They seem to have planned it around the current ducts/sleeves which aren't being utilised at the moment - most of them anyway, as mentioned above (i.e. Telkom cable coming from the street pole). Can they still make it invisible from the outside somehow by still using the current ducts/sleeves?

Bumping this, and another question: is there any reason why the termination boxes need to be outside the home, i.e. on the exterior wall of the unit? Metrofibre seem to be insistent on that. If it was my home I would say yes, do it, but it's a point of contention for our body corporate, as mentioned previously.

Did they provide reason why? did they change how they do the installation? mine they used the existing infrastructure to run into house even used old telkom cable as a draw wire. My white termination box sits inside my house.

I am thinking it's because it's in a complex, so they are expanding it out from one termination box to inspection boxes at every unit? But that's only me rationalising it to myself, I could be way off here.

I see what you saying, I guess best bet is for people to actually see what they are planning to do.

Haha I just mailed Metrofibre exactly that - to send me an example of the inspection box already installed somewhere else, which could clear up the confusion, as I think people are seeing in their mind's eye a big, white termination box against their wall on the outside.

OK so digging through the planning, I found that it's an OPTIBOX16 that will be placed outside each unit:

https://www.hubersuhner.com/en/prod...-fiber-boxes-and-outlets/optiboxes/optibox-16

So, 3 questions:
1. Is there any good reason it can't be placed inside units, instead of on the walls on the outside? The limited search results I could find out about it, it looks to be placed inside. What am I missing?
2. Why does every unit need one of these? As I said, quite a n00b with this, so no idea why each unit needs one.
3. Won't this get damaged by rain/sun in time? I see it's UV resistant, as well as "Enclosure meets the requirements for moderate outdoor applications (IP56)", which doesn't exactly sound "bullet proof" to me.

You might have mentioned it but does your complex have the necessary infrastructure? like ducting running into each unit, maybe this is a cost effective way of doing it?

The ducting is already existing, yes.

I have received the reason for the inspection boxes outside each unit - it's to link the main line to each unit, basically in series, that's why it needs to be external, which makes sense.

Now to find a compromise between MetroFibre and Body Corporate which will work for everyone.

/mumbles to self "Good luck with that"

when it works it's great. we're on 25mbps and it's maxed out when i do a speed test and almost maxed out when doing speedtest to florida on vpn.

but when it goes down, you're pretty much on your own. they don't respond to fault reports on email. we're down today since i woke up at 4:30(probably even before then), so i don't know when we'll be back up again. i expect downtime at least once a month now.

This is exactly the reason I've cancelled and gone back to VDSL. A working and stable connection means everything to me, and Telkom is far more reliable than Metrofibre at the moment. Metrofibre need to up their customer service game and improve their reliability before I'll give them my money again.

I beg to differ it has been nothing but reliable for me, I have never been down in a year and they always communicate if there is going to down time.

I also got metro fibre beginning of this year. Total downtime maybe 10 hours total.

So far their service has been brilliant.

Also have had very little issues with them, much better than my ADSL line.

Luck of the draw then. When it works it's great but our complex has at least 2 consecutive days of downtime every month without fail. I will likely switch back to fibre in 3 months depending on the feedback from my neighbours.

I have been waiting 3 days for my modem to be activated - now they say that no paperwork was submitted from installers when it was. Today they close for Christmas holidays and no one answers. Now I have no internet. (As the service was guaranteed to be up by the end of November)

Disappointed.

Struggling with my internet tonight. Anyone else got issues?

Getting this on my 50mbps line: https://speedtest.mybroadband.co.za/result/5865888 :(

Also weirdly enough, my router logs has PPOE UP event happening about everyday (when the modem resets) and I have been struggling to connect devices to the network...

Can't stream 480p also???....
