that's what i thought... phew, as long as everythings' okay for the wc tourists!

also, i really think the tourists will use the railways. and expect them to at least get them to the games on time. i dunno who these people think they're kidding!!
 
Cape Town station work continues.

PRASA is actually one of the government bodies on the up rather than in a decline.

They have to work off very limited budgets, and have been doing well thus far, focusing on priority projects while refurbishing train sets with funds that are available.

They are finally operating correctly with reasonable targets, 2010-2015 a stabilization period and 2015+ an expansion phase e.g. buying new train sets.

For the WC, many stations around Cape Town will have parking available for park and rides with security and decent parking.
This was funded by the City due to the rail agency's cashflow issues.

All work stopped at Cape Town Station today. The contractor was not paid again so could not pay his workers. As to buying new train sets. They are stripping trains at Salt River for spares.
 
The station contract is under PRASA not Metrorail. So if work has stopped I assume PRASA are short on funds.

New train sets only 2015+ when funds become available.
 
OK read the thread, but traffic is hectic everywhere...why not sink the entire railway system then to create more space
 
Salt River Station is a mess. They have now lifted platform 2. Gravel & dust on 1 & 2 now. How long is it going to take to resurface those platforms. :mad:

Well now that work has stopped, I reckon probably a week before the world cup starts...

Maybe in the rest of South Africa, but in Cape Town tourists use the train all the time. You easily notice it whenever there's a big game on etc. For the World Cup there will be hundreds on the trains.

Metrorail cancels security contracts: DA

The Democratic Alliance has claimed that it had documents showing Metrorail intends to cancel contracts with companies providing security in its train stations.

"Leaked documents indicate that Metrorail will on March 12, 2010, cancel contracts with security companies that have been providing safety and security services to commuters at train stations," said DA MP and transport spokesman Manny de Freitas.

He said that Metrorail cancelled the contracts after security companies raised their staff wages.

"When suppliers turned to the courts for relief, Metrorail opted to terminate the contracts in order to avoid paying the increases," said de Freitas.

De Freitas said he was informed by Metrorail staff that security responsibilities left open by the termination of contracts will be fulfilled by 2,000 volunteers from the SA Commuters Organisation.

The DA intends to issue parliamentary questions to the Minister of Transport on the issue of security at train stations.

Metrorail could not immediately be reached for comment.

Gautrain: Govt faces R10bn lawsuit

Pretoria - A claim of more than R10bn against the Gauteng government is seemingly in the offing for "delays and disruptions" to Gautrain building operations.

This is according to Jeremy Cronin, Deputy Minister of Transport, following remarks by Brian Bruce, chief executive of Murray & Roberts. Murray & Roberts is part of the Bombela consortium, which is building and will operate the Gautrain system.

If the claim succeeds, Gauteng's taxpayers will have to foot the bill.

Has work not stopped because they have discovered an old anchor, old harbour wall and parts of a timber jetty beneath the station?
