Pretoria - Blue Bulls director of rugby, Heyneke Meyer, is set to become the new Springbok coach.

The Rapport newspaper has been reliably informed that Meyer and Jurie Roux, CEO of the South African Rugby Union (SARU), met in Pretoria on Saturday to finalise his contract as Bok coach.

The new Springbok coach will officially be named on Friday.

This comes after rumours surfaced last week that Peter de Villiers would be reinstated as coach on an interim basis after Meyer struggled to get a release from his contract at the Blue Bulls.

But according to Rapport, Meyer and the Blue Bulls Company were able to agree terms to release him from his position at the union.

However, some compensation will need to be paid to the Blue Bulls as some directors are still unhappy with Meyer’s departure after he was appointed less than a year ago.
Narce.

Wonder if this is true.

And if it is I wonder what his coaching team will look like.

this man should have got the job 4 years ago!

The announcement will be televised live on Supersport at 2pm on Friday (27 Jan).

Odds-on favourite is .... Heyneke Meyer.

And if he were to fail as the Bok coach then will he be regarded as a failure or will Peter de Villiers still be the problem?

Same as any other coach.
If he loses a game he'll be called an idiot.
If he loses a lot of games he'll say he is building a team for the WC.

QFT. Pdivvy like any coach made some mistakes imo but he was villified unfairly.

Haha, this is true. I must say though that Meyer told the Bulls board that he will build them a team from the start and the first season or two the Bulls was VERY poor (twice wooden spoon champs in the super series iirc) BUT after that they had a steady climb towards the top and their they won a lot more then they lost, and became one of the best provincial teams of the last 50 years.

Sometimes there is too much buck passed onto the coaches/managers.

Players seem to take less responsibilty when things turn sour and often the coach needs to get the sack.

These guys are professionals, being playing sports since their teens.....

Its so much easier to blame management when players are simply not performing.

I am sure Meyer stipulated it.
Looking forward to see who the support staff wil be.

Good stuff!

On the other hand, why does SARU award a 4 year contract? Surely it makes sense to offer a 2 year contract and then decide if the coach is worth another 2 years. Unless of course Meyer stipulated 4 years or nothing.
Trust me, there will be a performance based clause in that contract!

I wonder who had the biggest agenda during that press conference?

The guy hammering on and on and on about transformation and black coaches on the shortlist?

Or the guy from Keo asking if Luke Watson will be captain? (Remember that Luke Watson is a Keo client)

Erm... Watson wouldn't make my third or fourth team but points to the guy from Keo for trying.

EDIT: Back on topic, I'm really pleased for Heyneke and I hope he's not too rusty. I would have preferred John Mitchell if he'd been up for the Springbok job but I'm really, really, really pleased he'll still be looking after my Lions.

Mitchell needs to show that he can make the Lions a force in the Super Series first imo.

Heyneke showed that he brought a below average Bulls team to a 4 team CC winning and Super 12 winning team in under 6 years iirc.

Yup. You're right. Agreed. Track record and all that.
