Microsoft bond issue sparks takeover rumors

Microsoft launched its first bond issue, sparking rumors the US software giant was contemplating a takeover bid.

Buying EA (if they are even willing to sell) could strengthen their dominance in the desktop market, how ever I doubt Sony would sit back and let this happen without a fight. I would expect Microsoft to be cautious, not putting all their eggs in one basket with Windows 7's release around the corner.

To me, it would make more sense to acquire developers within the cellular market to defend their market share from Google.

The current economic climate has hurt Sony way more than it has MS.

Only time will tell what is goint to happen.

Er, there is no option in the poll for "I don't think they're prepping for a buyout". $3.75bn is a minuscule amount in the context of buyouts, and there is no need for them to leverage such a small portion of the deal. I don't believe the bond issuance is preparation for a buyout, but rather for capital expansion within the current economic climate, where conditions are favourable for debt financing for large companies. Debt is cheap now and for corporates with a long-term financing strategy, that is a good thing.

However the times right now call for consolidation and maybe I'm wrong and MS are strapped for disposable cash...
