Microsoft closing Encarta

there was an online version of Encarta? Really?

... now they tell me.

I first bought a copy in 95 and enjoyed using it, the next edition I bought was in 2005.
Nothing much had changed in 10 years, except the content. Sofware hadn't improved much.

It looks like they're stopping Microsoft Money as well, been 2 years since an update now.

yar was awesome when it was released.
However I also was unaware that they had a online version??

I wonder how PeterCH`s Encarta shares are doing. Pity Encarta could not compete with Wikipedia.

problem with Wiki is that the content is not a 100% reliable....at least with Encarta it was. Encarta 95 = good marks in school projects! woot!

People have become better at using the net and people always go for the free stuff, surprises me that Encarta was around this long

100%? Hmm maybe a few percent higher than Wiki. At any rate, Wiki is massive. The broader the field becomes, the more room for subjective articles and topics.

I'd say that there is MUCH more correct information on Wiki than would have ever been in Encarta. But then back to what theJonster actually meant - there are perhaps way more incorrect information as well. Imo Wikipedia is one of the best things that have been conjured up by the mess that is the 'Internet.' And I don't mean that in a bad way.

I think Google succeeded in taking over Encarta.

Which is why Microsoft hates it, Ballmer specifically... he wants to "kill" google.

At that point, Mr. Ballmer picked up a chair and threw it across the room hitting a table in his office. Mr. Ballmer then said: “******* [Google CEO] Eric Schmidt is a **** ****. I’m going to **** bury that guy, I have done it before, and I will do it again. I’m going to ***** kill Google.” ….
This guy is a douche and puts me off Microsoft big time.
