Microsoft considering Skype purchase

Sucks. So now Windoze will include Skype and development for Linux will cease?

What exactly would MS bring to the party? So they might now include it in the OS?

Windows phone for one thing would benefit from having Skype built in at an operating system level.
It's a good buy, even if they don't do something specific with it, just rebrand it as microsoft skype or something like that...

Only time will tell if this is a great buy or not,, and if it's confirmed that MS has bought Skype we can expect an announcement on the 24th of May when they finally reveal Windows Phone 7.5 code named Mango

It'll be so sad to see skype become a bloated piece of rubbish MS software...I'm really really hoping this either falls through, or that MS has learned enough from the success that Security Essentials is because it does what it has to without getting in the way, and they apply the same thinking to skype.

What will they do with MSN Messenger rubbish that was. this buy would be good for MS and they DEF load into their OS all new PC's will ship with ti standard innit

Lets hope this is for the better, but am worried it will detract from all as currently is and will be limited to Microsoft products only

They will probably want to integrate the service into Office as part of the 'Pro' edidtion so that you may 'network' with friends and colleagues. Would have liked to see it stay independant

MS will buy anything that will help them become the once dominant 'PC/TECHNOLOGY' player they once were.
I suppose their stratergy is ... "If we cant build it.. buy it !"

All company's do this. If you think Google started Android and Google Earth, think again!

Fantastic, now when I buy my next Nokia it will come with Windows Mobile and Skype

It's done. *.5 Billions won the day. Goodbye working platform, hello something else.

Let's hope someone in skype "accidentally" wikileaks full source code of skype and the server platform. Otherwise I really hope microsoft realised the size of the community they are going to tick off... a community which hopefully includes all the PSN attack members. :)

Difference is, Google bought Android and Google Earth (and many other technologies) when they were still new, small and relatively unheard of, and then grew them both into something massive and something great. They threw their best and cleverest brainiacs at it, invested lots of intellectual property into it, and made it better, then marketed the hell out of it.

Now Skype is already something massive and something great (almost 600 million users world wide), and already well known and in widespread use. MS will buy it and then turn it into a piece of shyte.

In any case, Skype is already starting to become bloated and cumbersome to use. I guess it's all downhill from here.

Damn! I guess we can now completely rule out Skype for the PS3 :( Surely this is anti-competitive behaviour? MS will now have it's messenger toolset, netmeeting and OCS. If MS integrates Skype and OCS that can't be good.
