Microsoft debuts Xbox Music

Looking forward to checking this out .... Last.FM adverts are terrible, 1min worth of HD ads takes 10 on my 2Mbit line

Quite right. What is it again that is preventing us from accessing the full iTunes Store here in South Africa?
That would be Apple.

you can thank the dinosaurs in the music industry for that
Not really, they took a long time to get on board, but they have.

The cult of Apple strikes again. The fact that we don't have itunes is Apple's fault, they obviously don't care about South Africa (and yet South Africans keep buying their products). There are already a number of DRM-free music stores operating locally, most reasonably priced is the Nokia Ovi Music Store South Africa. The SA music industry doesn't seem to have any problems with digital distribution or DRM-free music being sold in SA in anymore. It's quite reasonable that Microsoft will launch Xbox Music in SA - if they have good prices then I'll be happy to support them.

Actually not entirely,

There is the rights holders that are an issue, as well as classifications board. Apparently it costs R5k to get a game classified in this country... and no game on the App store would make R5000 for the developer.

(This thread is about music and not games, but I'll answer that anyway)
Really? Then how is it that Google Play hosts tens of thousands of games all available in SA? What about Blackberry Appworld? Whatever it is Nokia uses these days? Samsung apps? Apple is the only company that doesn't have games in its SA app store. I believe the FPB long ago conceded that they can't practically regulate this, their regulations apply to physical games in SA. Also note the Steam store sells directly to SA and are also not subject to the FPB fees either. So it's pretty much just Apple.
